4 new widgets

The guys at iPhoneology didn't have anything better to do this weekend, so they were poking around in the iPhone's firmware, and look what they found: four applications they hadn't seen before, including one for mobile radio that's not even supported in the iPhone's hardware. They also found a few widgets that aren't on the iPhone yet, either.

As you can see in the screenshot above, it has an entry for a Unit Converter, as well as three widgets: a phonebook (something that's already available in the Phone section of the iPhone), a Translation widget and a World Clock. The iPhoneologists also posit that there could be a dictionary in the offing.

Since iPods have gone without radios for so many years, it seems unlikely that the iPhone would adopt such a capability. However, there is already a radio on board with the iPhone, so maybe it's not that much of a leap to guess that there may someday be an FM radio inside the iPhone, too. But we know what radio we'd like to see in there, 3G instead of the EDGE network.

Other than radio, those have to be the most unnecessary widgets I have ever seen.

Actually, if America moves to the metric system, us Americans will REALLY need a unit converter more than any other time! We know intuitively what a pound, a mile, and a gallon are, but because we are so rarely exposed to metric units outside of the classroom, many of us can't substantively quantify a gram, meter or liter without some sort of a reference.

The phonebook may be a yellow/white pages widget.

Perhaps, though Google Maps makes an excellent Yellow/White pages all on its own, for business listings anyway.

It will never happen.
The US officially moved toward a metric system many years ago. The problem is nobody wants it! Hell will freeze over before metric is used widely in the US . (Thank God for global warming.) So I AGREE a metric converter is a nice add.

that's right. The US actually using the metric system is about as likely as the English switching to driving on the right side of the road.

But with them, all they would have to do is move the steering wheels.

I only know 1 thing in this world that I have measured by the gram ...
