Gary over at macmost.com (a fantastic source of tutorials, if you're unfamiliar) just put together a timeline of the Mac hardware, OSs, and Apple milestones here:

The EDM soundtrack gets very repetitive, so you may want to mute it. It really surprised me how many, and how often, different Mac models came out in the early days.
