So I’m on the sideline trying to decide if I should go ahead and get a Mac mini now, or wait until the next update. I have a 24” iMac, but want the mini to use in the living room to hook up to my (not yet purchased) 42” HDTV.
But rather than a Mac mini, wifi router, HDTV, etc., what I really want is for Apple to just go ahead and make a 42” iMac!!:)

I don't see this happening anytime soon unless they have a video card designed specially for it. Resolutions over DualDVI will happen on video cards when Super HD becomes the norm... and that's like in 5 years minimum. Everything will be different then.

42" won't fit on a desk. Even 30" is on the limit of usability.

If you want a living room computer, thats what the Mini and :apple:TV are for.

20" is pretty average for desktops (though ~22" is becoming more and more popular) so 42" iMac would be HUGE. Can't see it happening in near future

And it would be really hard on your eyes to sit that close to a 42". I have a 24" and it's as big as I can deal with.
As I stated before, I already have a 24” iMac, and that is plenty big for the desk.:) The reason I have that Mac is because I like the idea of an all-in-one computer for my desktop.
Likewise, rather than buy various components for my living room entertainment center, I’d prefer an all-in-one system and a 42” iMac would pretty much do it. Plug-n-play right out of the box. Hulu, surf the web, Netflix, etc., etc..

I find the 27" pretty daunting. I have a 32" LCD tv and can't imagine sitting in front of that as a monitor, let alone 42".

I guess I’m not getting across what I’m talking about.
I wouldn’t be sitting at a 42” monitor. I’d be sitting back on my sofa watching movies, tv shows, etc. on my 42” HDTV that just happens to have a Mac built in.
I don’t want an HDTV that I hook up a Mac mini, DVD player, speakers, etc. to. Just a plug-n-play solution to my living room entertainment center.
42” and bigger HDTV’s are pretty common these days, and that’s what I’d like. An HDTV with the styling and ease of use that Apple is famous for.:)

Basically an Apple-branded HDTV with Apple TV or Front Row-like capabilities?

Not a bad idea. Their are arguments both for and against it, but as the iPod/iPhone has shown, there is a big market for stand alone Apple products.
