To those who have updated to iOS 17. Have you used this new format with your 14pro? Are the pictures any different in quality or anything with this new HEIF format compared to the standard RAW? Or is it simply a space saving feature?

Are they both undergoing apples processing? Is it a no brainer to just switch this on and always take the 48mp HIEF pictures all the time vs the standard 12mp?

I’m still on 16.7 on my 14pro and this is one of the only new features that’s interests me.

I have a 15Pro (my first Pro model) and have been playing with the various HEIF and ProRAW files. The resolution looks amazing for a Phone picture. Still have not decided if the HUGE ProRAW 48MP files are worth the size compared to the HEIF 48MP files. I guess if you have to do some heavy editing (like Photoshop, etc.) or certain circumstances (like night photography) it may pay. Still up in the air.

I wish you could configure the phone to shoot 48MP heif or 12MP depending on the amount of light. Plenty of light so you don't really need pixel binning to get the best quality? 48MP all the way. Lower light conditions (but not enough to need night mode) should use 12MP with pixel binning.

I want the best possible quality without having to think about it so much.

I just took two photos with the phone being stationary on my desk and both RAW 48 and HEIF 48 look exactly the same (I compared them on my laptop screen, not the tiny phone screen).

RAW carries lots of extra data useful in editing, but it seems the image processing path is basically the same.

And this is on a 14 pro?

So 14 pro owners on iOS 17 have you set your phone to take 48mp HEIF primarily? Is it a big upgrade over the standard 12mp HEIF? I’m still on iOS 16. Is it worth updating to 17 for this? What do you think?
