4GB iPhone w/o contract on eBay for $400+? Why?

Hi all,
What good does buying a used iPhone with the AT&T contract cancelled do? Can you then find a different (cheaper) provider for cell phone service for your iPhone? I don't understand why these are going for so much $$$ when you could buy a new one (8GB for less).

Although, as strange as this sounds to some former PC users, those 4GB ones (especially in sealed box) will fetch some decent cash in a couple years.

Why? Well there is a HUGE following of Apple collectors. So few were made, relative to the rest, and it is know to be a version 1. Its like the Lisa computers from Apple fetching thousands. Even the first line of Macs will fetch near a grand for one in decent shape

So maybe its just the collectors our there getting a head start! lol
