I've been heavily researching RAM for my MacBook Pro. I used to build PCs for my parents and a gaming rig for my brother, so I enjoy researching products and finding the best stuff out there, even if it means spending a little more than something I find for a "great price".

Its been very difficult for me to decide on which RAM to go with. Alot of people have gone for OWC. I am not familiar with this brand (does not mean its bad) I just prefer to use a product I have used and am familar with.

In all of the PCs I have built I use Corsair. I've used the higher end sticks for my parents comp (it was also built as a semi gaming rig for me at one point), and the Value Select stuff for my Bro, knowing he would upgrade it later.

So naturally I'm really wanting to use Corsair. Unfortunately Corsair does not offer a 4GB kit for the MacBook Pro.

Right now, I'm set on buying from Crucial, another comany I'm familar with and know is of high quality.

So here is are some thoughts and ideas I've happened upon. I know one of the brands Apple uses for memory is Samsung. I've searched (and have been given links) for their memory, and their price for 4GB comes very close to the $750 that Apple is asking for.

Here is an e-mail to Corsair, and their response (edited but for main question):

"Is Corsair going to be releasing a 4GB kit for the new MacBook Pro's anytime soon? My other consideration at the moment is Crucial, which while I know they are a reputable brand, I would prefer to use a product I am not only familar with, and have used in the past, but trust."

Reponse:

"There is not currently a 4GB kit available, however there are 2GB SO-DIMM modules that should be compatible with your system. The part number for this module is VS2GSDS667D2, 2 of these modules will get you to your goal of 4GB."

Well, I checked out this RAM, and it as well is very very pricey. So again, going this route I would spending the same if not more than Apple, even if I find this a very trusted brand.

On another note, Newegg offers a 3GB kit for the old MacBook Pro's. It consists of 2GB+1GB which runs for $175. I was thinking, if you buy two of these, which comes to $350, you would be getting 2x2GB sticks out of it. It would be half the price of Apple's upgrade, however, you would have an extra 2x1GB of memory. Maybe you can find something to do with them.

So, I think in the end I'm going to buy from Crucial ($280), and leave it at that. This post was just to shed some light on what I've found, and what the possibilities are out there. I could have however, overlooked something, so if there is something you find that can hone in on this search, lemme know! But, mainly, the research is b/c I myself do not want to use OWC or some of the other brands I'm in no way familar with. I want to use something I have used, and seen, and am familar with with over 8 years.

Thanks.

I purchased a 2x2gb Crucial RAM from Buy.com when it was on sale for $99. If you are not in a hurry, you may want to see if the price comes down and then make the purchase. Other people have also had luck with OCZ memory currently on sale at Outpost.com - but I have no experience with OCZ.

Generally, Macs are more finicky when it comes to requiring quality RAM. I went with Crucial for peace of mind.

I have the 4GB kit from OWC for my MBP and have encountered zero problems. OWC is a reputable company and many other members here are regular customers. Their 4GB kit (2x2) retails for $225. From what I can gather, ram is ram.

Edit: That 3GB kit you metioned was for the Core 2 Duo MBP's (2.16-2.33GHz) before this latest refresh (2.2-2.4GHz).

Yeah, I don't understand why you'd pay for Crucial RAM when OWC is cheaper. I realize there is a such thing as bad or cheap RAM out there, so going with the cheapest product isn't always the best idea, but OWC isn't low-quality RAM. It's a very popular brand and PLENTY of users around these forums have bought and used it, and I've never heard any complaints.

I'm using Memory Bank 2 GB modules I got for $109 each from 18004memory.com, and have had no problems. I've bought (mostly PC) RAM from them for years.

I have 4GB of OWC RAM in my MBP and no problems. But if you really want to use Crucial because you're familiar with them, then have fun paying for the name. I'm familiar with Ford, but I'd never spend money on anything made by them...just something to ponder.

I just bought some OWC...like you I wasn't familiar with them...until I found they are a mac specialty ram.

I love my 2gb sticks :)

Thank you all for the reply

Gymnut: I realize the 3GB was for the last gen MacBook Pros, I was just pointing out that even though corsair asks for an arm and a leg for a single 2GB stick, that you can get a kit which actually includes a 2GB stick (and a 1GB) for a fraction of the cost. I would assume memory between the two laptops haven't changed, just the size it can read from.

Just because some place is cheaper doesn't mean that OWC isn't a mac specialty store.. wtf is that logic?

I have no argument in OWC being a mac specialty store. However, "mac specialty RAM" makes no sense. There's no difference between that RAM and any other DDR-667 SO-DIMM out there... other than it costing more.

Wow, I have to say, from all the forums I visit, take part in, or get advice from, this is by far the best I've encountered.

More so, thank you very much whateverandever. I understand your help, and I understand those pointing out where to save some money. But more importantly, there are those of us stubborn enough to pay more (even when we really know we shouldn't, or don't need to) to buy something we think will give us our ease of mind.

Again, thank you, and thank you whateverandever. I'm still in the search however. I called Fry's earlier (where I usually go for components if I don't buy from newegg) and they actually said they are just now starting to get into Crucial, but they would recommend Kingston, Corsair, and OCZ.

So right now I have Corsair (the link whateverandever gave me) at $200.
I also have Kingston right now with a rebate at $231.
**The value select of the Corsair I will have to look into. Theres some articles I've ran across reguarding value RAM, I'll have to find them again.
As for OCZ, which Fry's and some other members have talked about (not to mention AnAndTech has alot of reviews of their higher end sticks) I'm still checking them out and what they are running from reliable sites.

Thanks again

I paid less for the Crucial "name" than you did for the OWC "name" :D And with the $5 review discount from PriceGrabber, it comes out to even less ;)

Granted most people get something completely different than what Apple puts into their MacBook Pros, it would be interesting if everyone who has upgraded their RAM to take note of the brand Apple supplied them with.

I've read there are four brands Apple uses regularly, Samsung, and another one related to Crucial, and two others I can't name off the top of my head.
But, I think it would be interesting to see what people are replacing. Maybe even give looking buyers out there an idea of what to go for if they are unsure about recommendations.

Just another thought.

Hynix, Nanaya, and Samsung are the three I've come across in my MacBooks / MacBook Pros.

Mac specialty ram? Load of crap.

Not the best deal Outpost/Frys has had, but it's still $35 cheaper than OWC for two of them.

If the OCZ sticks come back in stock it's only $170 for 4GB. $65 cheaper than OWC.

$170? Ouch! I have just ordered 4GB of the OCZ for £140 from Misco, so that would be £120 less VAT. About $70 more than you pay in the States. To be fair, the OCZ are PC-6400, but PC-5300 is running out now in the UK and is about the same price if you can find it.

The only other brand I have seen in the UK offering 2GB sodimms are Kingston, and their value range, in particular. Google KVR667D2S5/2G for more info. Stocks are dwindling, though.
