4k / 5k and Lightroom

Hi Everyone,

I haven't seen anything addressing this, so thought to post. I'm interested in:

1. The Minimum number of images per row in Grid mode (without any panels). My 30" 2560 x 1600 shows 4). How many are you getting with a 4k or 5k monitor?

2. Do adjustments or previews take longer in your experience, ie does the added real screen real-estate give a hit to performance when displaying / adjusting images?

are you aware of the little slider in the bottom-right of the grid-view that changes the size of the preview images?
In the smallest settings, without menues and on 4K Lightroom 5.6 displays 37 images horizontally.

You can change the size of the preview images. The standard size does not fill the screen if I remember correctly. Thus, it will either display a little blurry or render a new preview on the fly which leads to some lag ("Loading data" with a running circle in the bottom-centre of the preview image)
But this was already the case with 2560x1440 I believe because the standard preview size is somewhere around 2K.
You can change that in the catalogue settings. If I have large enough previews then browsing back and forth is instant. Without, every image takes a few seconds to load.

I cannot give you any info about general performance this time unfortunately. The display is currently running at 30Hz just to see what it looks like to have 4K until the new graphics card arrives. Everything feels laggy ;-)

Sorry, my mistake. I'm aware of the slider, and so i'm interested to know how BIG you can make them on a 4k or 5k screen (in Grid mode).

1. On my monitor, the largest you can get them is about 700 pixels wide. If that is an upper limit with LR, then those 700 px wide images will be very small when displayed on a screen with a high dpi, and Grid mode will be less useful. And so that's what i'd like to know: how few images people are able to get per row?

2. If LR is making the images in grid mode much bigger, is it at the expense of performance? Also, when working in Develop mode, with the image set to 'fit' the screen, again, does this have an impact on performance?

I'd love to hear people's actual experiences as i would like to get a 4k for my nMP.

Hello,

landscape oriented shots are 9,2cm wide (7 in a row) max on my 32" 4K.

OMG! That's so dissapointing!
Thanks for letting me know tho Thore.
I just guess that means that LR has a pixel limit on Grid images, and you can either see those pixels spread out with regular monitors, or see those same pixels concentrated together on a 4k monitor.
Either way, using 4k won't get you any new pixels to view when culling in Grid mode
