4K for Designer

Hey everyone,

I have looked through so many posts about 4K, but I haven't got the perfect answer yet.
I am looking to upgrade my Monitor for my Mac Pro. I currently have a Crossover 290M (29 inch 21:9 Format)

This is the list I have been looking at:

4K Monitors (3840x2160)

28 Inch Models:
Price range: $450-825

Lenovo Ll2821
Lenovo ThinkVision Pro2840m
Monoprice CrystalPro 4K
Phillips 288P6L
Crossover 284K UHD
Planar IX2850
AOC U2868PQU
ViewSonic VX2880ml

32 inch Models
Price range: $1000-1100

As far as I can see, the 28 inch models are TN Panels and the 32 inch models are IPS.
I’m a graphic designer, so I guess, I will have to go for an IPS.
Stuff that are important to me:
- More than 1 connection (HDMI for PS4 + DP for 4K via Mac Pro)
- Pivot/Rotation Function
- 60 Hz Refresh Rate
- Speakers (Even though they aren’t the best - just for the PS4 via HDMI)
- Height Adjustable (Not super important, but nice to have)
- USB, preferable USB3 (Not super important, but nice to have)
- Nice design (Not super important, but nice to look at)

Anyone with suggestions that have been in the same boat as me?

So I get something around now, or any rumors about a new wonder coming about Q1 2015? I can wait a few more months if needed, although I would love to get some more real estate to work with.

Do have a look at this one, unlike the previous IPS displays, this is a single Tiled one, and already comes with a mini-display port connector which makes it easier for Macs.

 
Stay away from the cheap 4K monitors in the 28in range! They are all crappy TN displays and if you care at all about color/uniformity and banding issues (gradient banding is terrible with TN monitors) pick up something more high end or stick with a non-4k IPS display.

Yeah my guts say don't pick up the 28 inch TN, but what about the 31.5 inch? They are IPS and less than $1k

I haven't played around with the two you listed but customer reviews seem favorable to middle-of-the-road. I really wish more sites had in-depth 4K round ups for non-TN versions.

I just picked up the new LG Cinema 4K display (By accident here's my thread where I'll post updates and impressions: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1816805/) which is SST but Apple only supports 50hz right now which may be an issue for me. Luckily I can return it within 30 days but I'll post impressions sometime soon.

Apple has no shame in their FAQs. In the first section they leave out the 2012 Macs that also support 4K at 30hz giving owners the impression they have to buy new computers and then in the last section they claim Windows on Boot Camp uses the same rules as OS X for 4K support.

Yeah but I'm assuming whatever works with my nMP will work with an older model with a better gfx card.

It's 60 hz, where did you get 30 from? Even in the video the state 60hz.

Straight from the first line on the Datasheet at Acer on the monitor.

"IPS panel - LED backlit screen - 3840 x 2160 resolution - 60Hz refresh rate - 6 ms response time"

At 2:50 he says 30hz and then later he says 60hz, maybe he was only referring to the dual link DVI input. But a quick Googling reveals it is an SST monitor which will default to 30hz in OS X according to the Apple support document above. Someone will have to test to see if this can be changed.

SST works at 60hz in OS X at 3840x2160, at least it did with the samsung 32" 4k and the LG 31MU39 4k. It even worked for me at 60hz in 10.8 with a GTX 680. I think this acer should be fine.

The issue at that point is the AG coating which was terrible on the Samsung. The LG is great but you need to buy a better cable and 17:1 aspect is strange. The acer I don't know how bad the ag coating is gonna be.

Cool but get it confirmed or tested somehow before parting with your time and money. Otherwise the quality of the video looks good.

Linus states in the video his only issue with his Mac ( 5K Retina ) is a sleep on wake issue with the monitor.

He clearly states the Dual link DVI is only 30hz, as it's only technical supports 2560x1600 60hz as a max.

Yes I just googled it and someone on Acer's forum says the monitor doesn't wake from sleep on his 6,1 no matter which port he tried, and same problem with his iMac using Win 7

Anyone have any updates on this monitor considering getting this and a nMP

I'm keeping it just delegating it to render slave jobs. My family does jewelry I calculated it would be rendering 16-18 hrs of the day rendering items designed in our over seas office.

Since a nMP has slightly better performance and is much quieter I am leaning towards it rather than another cMP ... and I just don't wanna mess with a Windows build even though I know I can build one cheaper.
