4k monitor on an oMP

Hi Everyone,

Is there a way to hook up a 4k monitor to an oMP?

I'm using a 5,1 with a ATI Radeon HD 5870 card, and wonder if anyone has any info that i've missed?

thanks - i thought as much, but i was wondering if there is another stock card that will work with 4k monitors (on a 5,1), or do you need a nMP if you want to use a 4k monitor?

There are graphics cards that will support 4k monitors. For instance...

At the expensive end, the nvidia Quadro family will do it as well. I'm just exploring this issue for myself. You might want to check with macvidcards for flashed pc cards options as well.

There are options. In fact more options than good ones for actual 4k monitors at the moment Issues are drivers and power supplies, some options might want to draw more power than is healthy without supplemental power, which is easily addressed.

There is a link that says the Nvidia 770GTX supports 4K:

Maybe the Nvidia 680GTX also provides 4K but I still need to check other links or sources.
 
If I remember correctly, there was a big thread about the GTX 680 Mac Edition NOT supporting 4K, as the DisplayPort version on the card is only DisplayPort 1.1, and of course not HDMI 2.0 - I believe the conclusion was that it was feasible with a GTX 680 Mac Edition and DOUBLE HDMI inputs via an adapter.
 
All of this "Will it run 4K" discussion is forgetting that MANY cards can run 4K, the real question is how do you define "run"?

I'm pretty sure a 5870 will run it, but at 30Hz.

A GTX680 can run it just fine at 60Hz....in Windows. The 7950/70 twins have 60 Hz OSX support and many Nvidia cards should have it soon as well.

An ancient GT120 can run it at 30Hz, not that big a deal if 30 Hz is all you want and just want real estate.

Thanks everyone, it looks to me like the choice isn't there if you're after (as i am) 4k @ 60 Hz OSX, with a stock card - Apple say it's a no go :(

I use LR and PS primarily, so i'm keen to keep the card AdobeHappy™. Thanks for the info, i'll investigate the 7950/70 cards you mention, but i take it that they would need some sort of flashing, and wouldn't have a boot screen?

Once flashed you do get boot screen. If you really want an Apple blessed card, then you get to choose between EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition or Sapphire Radeon 7950 Mac Edition. Both are expensive when compared to their PC equivalent, and once the PC parts are flashed, they are essentially the same.
