Dear forum,

I am wondering how your experience is with a 4K external monitor on a Macbook M4 Pro on scaled resolutions. Any model will do. Since there is controversial information online, I would really like to find out your experience.

Hopefully the answers could help me and others decide to go for the screen or not.

Warm regards,
Jeroen

4k monitors on any Apple Silicon Mac runs fine. More then enough power to handle scaling. We run Mac Studios with dual Dell 4k monitors in a production setting at work and there are zero issues.

I don't do anything demanding (mine's an M4 Pro Mac Mini, not a MacBook Pro), so it works fine for me. Like you, I've seen competing claims.

Do you run an app. called Blender, or other very demanding workloads?

The impression I got from contrasting online discussions was that scaling could potentially be a 'straw the breaks the camel's back' kind of thing, that little extra burden on the GPU that, stacked on top of a demanding workload, could make a noticeable difference for some power users. Post #7 in this thread discusses input from three other people on the subject - one had a substantial issue, 2 found the matter minor.
