4K Monitors

I currently own a MacBook Pro 13 inch Late model 2013 with the following specs:
2.6 Intel I5
8 GB Memory
Intel Iris Graphics Card 1536 MB
512 GB SSD
All this is hooked up to a Dell U2414H Monitor at 1920 X 1080 @ 60 Hz. using the display port cable. With the current prices of high resolution monitors, I am considering an upgrade to a 4K monitor but my research is giving me mixed results. At best I'm told I can but have to settle for editing at 30 Hz. I do not do video, only photo editing using Photoshop. It appears the MacBook Pro 15 inch Late model 2013 does work at 60 Hz but is using a Intel Iris PRO graphics card.
My other option is just upgrading to a monitor at 2560 X 1440 resolution but would love 4K if its possible. Any input will be much appreciated and thanks for your time.

30Hz is really frustrating to use for any task. I strongly suggest you skip it unless you're going to get a machine capable of driving it at 60Hz in the very near future.

It's probably best to get a monitor with better color. The U2414H covers 96% of sRGB. Aim for 100% sRGB, and as close to 100% Adobe RGB as you can (if you print your images).

Check out the Eizo CG277 if you have the budget and a BenQ SW2700PT if you don't.
Both are excellent for photography.

I have a Dell 2715Q, and usually connect a 2014 2014 MBP (Intel graphics). I connect using the supplied DisplayPort cable. I don't run at 4K very often, as it's too small for my eyes. Instead, I run at 1440p. Nice and sharp. For light graphics (think corporate powerpoint) this set up struggles. Not terribly so, but moving windows around and such, things are just the acceptable side of unacceptable. When I connect the 2013 with dGPU, it works fine. So as the other posters have suggested, don't necessarily get caught up in resolution.

The Dell U3014 is also a strong choice - I have the older U3011.

I'm looking at an inexpensive 4k for the living room but wouldn't consider anything with less than 99% AdobeRGB coverage for photo work.

There are all kinds of discussions on 4K and 5K monitors in the Mac Accessories forum. My Late 2013 rMBP with NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB graphics is driving a Dell UP2414Q at 4k @60Hz without any problem. In fact, I just ordered today a Lg 5K Ultrafine monitor that I will use at 4k until I can afford to upgrade the MacBook.

I don't know if you have to have the dGPU to drive 4K. That could be the case.

Are you able to properly calibrate this TV?
Do you use TV calibrator or a monitor calibrator?
Do you set its gamma?
How is the colour space for sRGB and AdobeRGB?
Also curious - how well are you able to match to printing?

Please share your results or the specs as concerned with photography....

Thanks in advance! I ask these questions because many here considered a decent TV
rather than a computer monitor and it would be nice to hear first hand from someone
using a higher end TV.

For less than half the price of the Eizo you can get the Lg 5k that does DCI-P3 gamut which is very similar in size to Adobe RGB. DCI-P3 has more yellows and reds than Adobe and less greens. Both gamuts are supersets of sRGB.

According to my local Apple store, the LG 5K is currently not available because of some bugs they need to fix.

Apple stopped selling in early Feb. Lg then fixed the RF shielding problem. Apple has restarted sales with shipments already restarted. There are several thread about this monitor in the Mac Accessories forum.
