The next iPod Shuffle will explain the strange UI controls of the 3rd. Well, it could be the 5th, but certainly this is where it's going...for GOOD REASON. Very, very good reason...
drum roll...
4th or 5th generation iPod will not have a body!
The whole thing will be contained inline in the audio wire! As things shrink, soon there will be no need at all for a little metal body. There will be a control, as now, dangling out of one ear, and the body (memory, battery) hanging out the other, balanced nicely.
I would think 3rd party manufacturers could sell earbuds as a pair, that simply terminate in separate 1/8th in. jacks that connect directly to the little "bumps" that will be hanging from each ear (controller on right ear, memory or battery or something on left ear. Earbuds would be sold like 2 disconnected earbuds with about 8 inches of audio jack terminating at 1/8th in jacks.
To charge, you disconnect one of the earbuds to receive the mail 1/8th in. Mac charger cable, which then connects via USB, like the new Shuffle does right now.
Makes perfect sense. How can this not be a 4th or 5th version?
No need for clip, no need for controls anywhere but the audio cable as they have it now.
Prediction: at the mid point of the audio cable connecting the controller and the memory / batter, will be a dime-sized apple logo, on a square, about 1/3 of an inch. You'll be able to get that in a few colors. The battery could be in that part
So it goes like this, if you laid in on the table:
<ear bud>---<control>---<logo-battery?>---<memory>---<ear bud>
This will happen, it's just a matter of time.
