How does this run on the ip4? Ever since the 3g debacle with ios4, I am super hesitant to upgrade the OS on my iphone, experience decreased performance and then unable to downgrade. I am on ios 5.0 or 5.0.1, I forget

So is this the case with the ip4 with updates?

Well I have an iPhone 4S, so I'm not sure if I can help you, but I have an iPod touch 4th gen and 5.1.1 runs exactly the same as 5.1 did. As in, it still runs as sluggish as it ever had. Take that for what you will.

Huge difference between a small incremental update (5.1.1) and a major OS upgrade (3 to 4)

Yeah, these are bug fixes, not major changes. No reason to be afraid of it unless someone finds a specific bug with it that makes it worse than what you have now. (And I haven't heard of anything yet.)

Honestly, I downloaded and installed it ... no apparent changes on my iP4. Still works very well with great battery life.

Personally, I always update the OS whenever one is available. Apps have to keep up with these changes and, if you don't update your iDevice, pretty soon there will be problems with apps designed for the current OS having to work on an older version.

I'm on a 4, and it works fine.
if not a little bit better then before on 5.1
given that apple still support the 3gs, we can feel safe that there won't be any issues with the 4 and iOS for a little while longer

You should be fine, it's just a small update. I would probably avoid iOS 6 though.

I probably won't update to iOS 6 unless I absolutely need some new feature it brings and I'm on a 4S lol. The iOS 4 on iPhone 3G thing scarred me for life.

iOS4 to iOS5?

Ok, so I avoided upgrading to iOS5 initially because of the battery issues many people were reporting, but I am thinking it might not be a bad idea to upgrade before iOS 6. It seems that many in this thread are reporting good performance and battery, but how does 5.1.1 compare to 4.2.10 (CDMA) in terms of performance and battery?

Currently, on my iPhone 4 [Verizon], I have 4 Days, 6 Hours of Standby with 4 Hours, 35 minutes of Usage and still have 15% battery remaining. I would hate to lose this.

I was running 5.0.1 jailbroken on my iPhone 4 and this weekend i downloaded 5.1.1 and ran it for a little while unjailbroken. 5.1.1 runs consistantly better, both stock and jailbroken, than 5.0.1 did. It backgrounds apps much better when you close out. U can have a ton of apps backgrounded in the multitask bar and it doesnt give the phone any noticeable lag. I used to always have to restart my phone and close out of all the backgrounded apps because my phone would still run like it was missing memory even after closing out of all the backgrounded apps. Not an issue now

You won't notice any difference in general in just upgrading to 5.1.1 on top of 5.0.
