MP 1,1-5,1 5,1 Disk read/write speeds incredibly slow

Hey everyone,

I'm on to a bit of a head scratcher here - I'm onto my second install of Mojave where I've had it run fine for a month or so, then have the read and write speeds on that SSD nosedive down to the 10MB/s territory.

So, specs for specifics:

Mac Pro 5,1 dual 2.66 6 core,
RX580,
Firmware 144.0.0.0.0
Apple 512gb SSD (just started happening on this install)
Samsung QVO 1TB (previous install which failed down the same path)

Currently (on the apple SSD) I'm getting writes in the 12MB/s range, and reads from 80MB/s
On the Samsung QVO I was getting 120MB/s writes and 6MB/s reads, which I wrote off as the drive being non-compatible, but now it's happened on the Apple SSD (pulled from a working machine, with a working install) I'm starting to think I might have some hardware issues.

Any thoughts on what it could be? Dodgy install? Overheating somewhere in the chain?

If it's ok, maybe test with other slot/bay.

Thanks for the reply tsialex - I've loaded up DriveDx, and the only error it's showing is the Program Fail Count sitting at 1,574. Not sure if that's a sign of total failure or not.

And interestingly, I had the QVO in the dvd SATA ports when it failed, and the current drive is in Slot 1...

I only have had one experience with a Sammy QVO SSD in a cMP . No reported problems either by me or my client . Some ppl here say this is a bad type of drive for our Systems .

Have you verified that TRIM is active ?

It wouldn't hurt to reset the NVRAM and SMC .

Program Fail Count errors show that you can't write to the NAND cells correctly. Try another disk, not the QVO, and check if you get normal speeds.

Just did a clean Mojave install on a 4TB HDD, in another bay, and about half an hour after the install my speeds have crashed again! System crawled to a halt, 10-15MB/s disk read and writes.. what the hell could do this?

Were both drives connected to machine previously? Any errors on the HDD in DriveDx? Power surge/spike has done similar in past.

QVO drive was new to the machine, Apple SSD also new to the machine, 4tb HDD came with it. QVO currently running as boot camp install with no issues. Drive Dx only showing issues on the Apple SSD as per the post earlier.

Are you sure that there are no other read/write operations in the background? Like indexing or similar?

Hi Bsbeamer, here's the reports.

I'll be running the machine again all day and seeing if/when it starts choking - anything I should keep an eye on for symptoms?

Did you run the DIAGNOSIS option by clicking that under PROBLEM SUMMARY?
Certainly looks like an SSD I would replace based on that error.

I agree that it sounds like the drive is nearing its end of life. Also, did you remember to enable TRIM when working with those SSDs? I can't remember if I had to explicitly set that on my 4,1 (flashed to 5,1) but I believe I did.

ah TRIM! I'd totally forgotten about trim after reading something about AFPS negating the full need for it. I didn't have TRIM enabled on the QVO - maybe that explains the buggy symptoms? But it is currently enabled for the Apple SSD (although it's clearly on its last legs)

TRIM shouldn't affect read speed
