Hello

I have been looking about for ages for info on 5.1 gaming in windows xp/vista on a mac pro (2008). But I cant seem to get a yes or no answer? On the apple forum a guy says no it cant be done only dvds yet other people say yes with optic out it works. Or maybe with a pcie soundcard for windows.

But again no one says yes or no. I would love if some one could tell me yes or no. I will prob buy z5500 speakers anyway to just even use for dvds/my ps3 but would love some 5.1 gaming in bootcamp.

I really hope some one can help or point me to some more info.

Thank you

From what I can tell, optical still works under XP, but only as a stereo system, not surround 5.1. I'd been looking into it for a while too thinking about the Z5500s but I think I'm gonna save the money and buy a nice 2.1 set.

Last page of that thread has a few people talking about how the optical works in Windows, but only displays as stereo.

I think it would work if Apple put out some new drivers, but until then the 5.1 won't work under Windows.

Yes 5.1 works... once you have the realtek sound driver installed, it sees your optical out. What I can't control in Windows that I can control on the Mac side is shutting off the tower's speaker and simply use my external optical speakers... even after selecting digital out, the internal speaker still kicks in.
