Funny enough I got my PCI USB3 card for my mac in jan this year and only just fitted it last night !! I note they are on sale on amazon today at 25 quid.

I am now using a 4TB My passport bus powered external drive plugged into it so wasn't expecting too much but tbh I have no clue about usb2, usb3, thunderbolt transfer speeds. I just ran the BlackMagic Disk speed test and it appears to be 3 times faster than my external usb 2 connection on the front - Does that seem right ? Best read write speeds for usb2 was 97 and 110 and best for usb3 was 317 and 338....

Also does anyone know if its ok to leave it permanently plugged in and on as I use Carbon Copy Cloner on a timer basis to back up ...BTW my Mac is never turned off. I also have to say in passing I have absolutely no idea what I might do if my MP ever fails as had it forever and can't see me parting with the sort of cash required for a new one :(

The number looks very wrong to me. They are too fast.

4TB My passport is just an 2.5" HDD, it's sequential speed should be just a above 100MB/s (with USB 3.0 connection).

For USB 2.0 connection, you should only get ~50MB/s.

All your numbers above are impossible and way beyond the spec.

Anyway, you can leave the USB HDD plug in 24/7.

Feel free to suggest a different disk speed test app...Actually just downloaded Bench I will return later with its stats to see how they compare...

The BlackMagic Disk Speed Test should work, but your numbers are very wrong.

How you do the test? Any screenshot?

Ah I completely mis-read it and read the first line where it says Write and Read rather than the dial reading - D'oh !! So my actual usb3 readings (reading it correctly) were Write 101.4 and Read 110.8.

These numbers looks perfect to me. For you info, this USB 3.0 card capable to deliver about ~500MB/s (shared by 4 ports).
