5,1 Mac Pro, ASUS GTX750 Ti Upgrade

Hi guys, I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro and an Asus GTX 750 Ti, which was connected to a mini 6 pin PCIE to PCIE power cable. The Mac Pro comes with an old GT 120 as well.

System: El Capitan 10.11.4
Nvidia Web Driver: 346.03.06f01 installed
CUDA driver: 7.5.26 installed
-When only GTX 750 Ti is installed:
There is system starting up sound, but screen remains black. Tried VGA, DVI and HDMI port, same results.

-When the GT 120 and GTX cards are installed at the same time:
System boots up normally when monitor is connected to GT120 card, and the driver can detect the GTX card, please see attached screen shot.

Black screen when monitor connected to GTX card, there is system starting up sound and won't boot up.


Please help!

Possibly a dumb question, but do you have the NVIDIA web driver selected on the Graphics Drivers tab of the NVIDIA prefpane? It's not enough to just 'install' the drivers.

I always thought the 750ti is a low power card requiring no extra power. I've got the eVGA version of that 750ti in my Mac Pro 4,1 (flashed as 5,1) and haven't connected any extra power to it. Are you sure you really need to do this on your Asus version?

Hey OP,

I have the same card as you the ASUS 750ti, and you do need the extra power cable. IIRC, the card has a red led which lights up if it isn't getting enough power. I have mine in slot 1 of a 2009 mac pro, and the extra power cable is connected to the left connector. The card isn't flashed, so there is a delay (about a minute or so) before the desktop appears. I use the DVI port or the VGA port (for a second monitor). No joy so far on the HDMI though.

System: 10.11.4
NVidia driver: 346.03.06f01

Thanks raymanster and Razzerman. I ended up with an EVGA GTX 960 4GB SSC. Computer started up without apple logo. Only used for few hours now, and no problem at all.

Played League of Legends. Worked fine.
