MP 1,1-5,1 5,1 my 5870 kicked the bucket,what should I do

Upon waking up the fans started spinning out of control and the display didn't come on. On a hunch, I took out the 5870 and put in the original GT120 I still had lying around. It starts up fine with that, so I'm assuming my 5870 is dead.

This comes at a very inconvenient time, as I was holding out to buy a new computer as soon as the M-series becomes available in higher spec.
Now I'm not sure what to do, I could soldier on with the GT120, but some of my software doesn't work well anymore with it. Buy another used 5870? Seen one for $100 but it seems such a waste. Or go for one of the "upgrades" like an RX580? This machine is still on Sierra, BTW.

Buy a entry M1 Mac Mini to hold you over, sell it when the "ideal" machine comes out - you won't loose much and have a brand new machine to use.

I would look at the RX580 or RX590. Try to find one made by Sapphire...not all RX's are the same. But before try to do a NVRAM reset using command R, Option P at startup on your keyboard and hold it down when booting up the computer till you hear at least the second startup chime (usually louder) then release keys and the apple sign should come up. Maybe you just need it to reset.

Find an RX580. I'm happy with my Sapphire Pulse RX580 apart from no boot screen.

I also tried a Vega56 (Sapphire Pulse) but the performance improvement wasn't big enough and wasn't comfortable with the amount of haphazard wiring required to keep it happy.

RX460 (Gigabyte) was too slow - slower than the dead 7950 it replaced.

RX570 (Sapphire Pulse ITX) gave me an issue though I don't recall what exactly.

Looking at that 580, seems like a lot of coin for a relatively old card, but component prices are unusually high across the board right now. A quick search showed lowest price $370...

The RX470(ebay $100) or RX560(ebay $75) is a MUCH CHEAPER option and both cards play nice with the 5,1 slot layout. Jumping up to a RX480, the price almost doubles for not much more performance. Even older cards, like the 680GTX from nvidia are around $100. (all prices included the shopping)

Aw shoot, that used to be the P-RAM reset, no? Why didn't I think of that...

It's just temporarily inflated right now. My spare MSI RX580 sold on Ebay for about ~$110 US a little over a year ago.

Look into Sapphire rx590 8gb cards also...they are just as good. Mine is a nitro card.
