Hi everyone,

First of all thanks to this community for providing so much information and being so helpful. I'm new to Mac Pros and picked up my mid 2010 5,1 a couple months ago to mess around with and play some games. I'm trying to get back into PC gaming after a very long break of using consoles only. I know its not a great gaming rig, but it seemed like a fun project and I like Macs. So on to the problem that I ran into:

The computer ran fine when I first got it but I started to research and plan to modify and update some things. I started PMing tsiAlex after finding out my bootRom was corrupted and would need to be cleaned up. I sourced a Vega 64 graphics card and a newer wifi chipset. I took the computer apart to do the Pixla's mod, install the new GPU and install the new wifi chip. Alex wanted me to test two bootRom's with GOP. But after reassembly it wouldn't power on, I tried what i saw on the forums, leaving it unplugged then plugging back in etc. Put everything back to stock, replaced the RTC battery. No change.

Next I started working my way through the service manual reseating the ram then disconnecting things and trying to jump start it from the back plane, no change.

Alex recommended removing the RTC battery and trying to start without the battery but that didn't work.

I got frustrated and left it alone for a couple of weeks with no RTC battery. When I reassembled and reinstalled the RTC battery figured i check again and when I plugged in the power cord it turned on. After shutting it down down though it wouldn't power back on.

I removed the RTC battery again and no start, so I left it overnight with no battery and not plugged in to power. Today I reinstalled the battery and it turned on as soon as I inserted the power cable, not even pressing the power button.

Now its running I have a red led on the CPU tray for Dimm slot 7 and that dimm is not showing in system report. It might have been there the first time it powered on but I had the side cover on and didn't see the led. I did not initially touch the ram at all until the no start happened, then i simply tried to reseat them. I have not tried to power down yet and reseat number 7, worried it might not restart if I do.

Does anyone have any guidance on potential solutions or next steps? Could it be the corrupted bootRom or a hardware failure?

Thanks! I’ll order a replacement PSU. I know I should probably get a spare system for testing like you've said in other threads, but there’s nothing reasonably priced locally right now.

Btw, when the RTC battery is not installed and you connect the PSU power cable, the Mac Pro starts.
