After a crash, I haven't been able to boot my computer. When turning it on, first I get black, and after a long time, it goes to a screen with patterns. See photo below. Any help would be appreciated. OSX Mojave. Thank you!

This is a perfect example of defective VRAM, replace the GPU.
As always, you were right. I took the gpu to a shop and it's the culprit. They revealed that the gpu had been modified to be a Mac gpu, since this is a PC gpu originally. The question now is, would a replacement that has not been modified work out of the box anyway? Thanks for all your help!

Difficult thing to answer without details, but if it's a PC GPU GPU that is compatible with a Mac Pro, should work, just without pre-boot configuration support.

I had an MSI RX 580. Question: Since that came down in price, I may be willing to spend a little more on the replacement. Is there a better GPU than this you recommend for 2009 5,1?

Depends on your target macOS release, also you have to provide enough power to the GPU. From the list below, only the RX 6600 and RX 6600XT can be connected directly to the backplane power connections, if you install an eVGA PowerLink, you can use a RX 5700XT or a VEGA 56 safely, everything else needs Pixla's mod.

  • Mojave supports up to AMD Radeon VII, also VEGA 56/64
  • Catalina support up to RX 5700XT
  • Monterey supports up to RX 6600/6600XT or RX 6800/6800XT (needs patching the GPU firmware with a PC for the GPU to work with a MacPro5,1)

Do your homework before buying anything and is also a good idea to test the Mac Pro with the original GPU to be sure that everything else is working.

I have Mojave, and I don't want to do anything beyond the hardware I already have. So RX 6600 and RX 6600XT are the best options?

You can run a GPU that does not have drivers with macOS, the newest GPU that is supported by Mojave is AMD Radeon VII.

You need Monterey to run a AMD Radeon RX 6xxx.

AMD Radeon VII is too expensive for me, and I don't want to upgrade soft/hardware, so I'll probably stick with the RX 580. But thanks so much for all your help.

VEGA 56 is not expensive nowadays, you will need a eVGA Power Link.

Do you think that's better than the RX 580?

~40% faster 3D/render/raster wise, while double or more the performance for video compression/decompressions/colour grading and with very similar power draw as a RX 580 factory overclocked.

It's a solid card for Mojave, but if you do not use apps that require a GPU, you will not notice all the performance gains over a RX 580.

The VEGA 56 models with the blower type of fan, the AMD reference model, are very sought after even to this day.

Hi Alex, I ended up getting the GeGorce GTX 1660. I can't get it to fit into the pcie slot. It could be because I'm trying to put it on the bottom slot, which is where I had my previous gpu. The new one has a plastic plate on its bottom that the previous gpu didn't have. What do you suggest in this case? Thanks so much!

Why?!?! It's a Windows only GPU…

Oh no! I thought because it was on that list that it would work on the Mac. Which one would work other than the RX 580 and RX Vega (I don't want to upgrade hardware)?

Are those lower performance than the RX 580?

Yes.

So RX 580 is the best that's available for Mac 5,1?

No. For GPUs with Mojave support, there are Radeon VEGA FE and Radeon VII, but these two are pretty expensive.

Mid low performance: RX460/560, RX 470/570,
Mid performance: RX 480/580, VEGA 56,
His end performance: VEGA 64, VEGA FE and finally VII

I have Sapphire Pulse RX 580 without any rom modifications and it works out of the box (without boot screen).
