Hi guys,

Quick question, I am a student that wants to buy a 5,1 Mac Pro and I noticed that the 2010's have the 5,1 identifier and so do the 2012 models. Looking at the market I can see that the 2010 dual CPU models(which is what I am looking for) are cheaper than the 2012 dual CPU models, is there any difference between the two model years since they both have the same identifier? If there is please let me know what they are. My plan is to have both Windows as well as MacOS on two separate drives.

Thanks!

mid-2010 Mac Pros and mid-2012 are exactly the same parts wise, Apple upgraded some of the Xeon models and added 12-core BTO for mid-2012, but it's exactly the same Mac Pro.

The only difference is that mid-2010 Mac Pros have 11-digits serial numbers and mid-2012 have 12-digits. All parts are interchangeable between mid-2010 and mid-2012.

early-2009 backplane and CPU trays are not compatible with mid-2010/mid-2012 Mac Pros.
