Here is my circumstance. I work between UK and US at times. I have an ATV which I took to the UK and has been working perfectly here.

I have two apple IDs, one for the UK store and one for the US store and predominantly use US one even when the UK.

When I just updated to ver 5.1 all appeared to go well and I got to the screen showing the new features. Press to continue.

I did and I saw a message stating my ID was only valid for the US iTunes Store. That is fine I thought.

Now that was where my problems began and now ends. It now will not allow me to do anything. I cannot navigate.

I cannot make the selection change from movies. It just appears not to want to do anything other than sit on the movies icon and even a forced reboot just ends up wig the same scenario.

I guess I will have to get to work out his to reset to defaults as that may be the only way to get around this.

This is a Bad Rotten Apple Upgrade!!!!!

does the LED on the front blink when you press a button?

you should try unpairing the remote. (hold menu and left for 6 seconds)
it's possible your pairing got messed up, or it decided to pair itself.

or if you have an iOS device, try controlling from the remote app.

I had the same initial thought. Perhaps the remote was causing the issue. However I noticed that the light on the ATV was coming on with each click. I did resatrt after restart and it would always come back to the same issue. I was stuck on the movie icon.

I was starting to think that I was locking up because I was using a US itunes login in a UK location. I had no way to restore the system as I was not able to move to the settings menu.

Eventually I managed to connect the ATV3 direct to my Macbook and restore it that way.

Now here is what happens next. I am then able to load the ATV3 and start to put ion all my details for logins e†c again. I deliberately change the location to US and use my US apple ID and password. All connectivity to non iTunes store worked. However I could not connect to the iTunes store.

Due to the fact it was 1am I have not completed my investigation or have reset the ATV to the UK location using my UK Apple ID and password I am suspecting that 5.1 is now restricting the ATV to only be capable of logging into the store of its host country with an apple id aligned to that country.. regardless of what you set your location to.

Anyone else seeing such an issue?

Have you tried connecting the unit via the micro usb port directly to your Mac? This has resolved post upgrade issue for some here. If it's an account issue, and as we know Apple are very security mined, you'd need to contact them, but from what you describe in your post I think it's hardware related.

Try connecting via the USB port on the ATV directly to a Mac (or whatever machine has your itunes library on it) and restore or perform the upgrade again.

If you read the second post that is exactly what I had done. I don't think it is a hardware issue as there was nothing wrong with the unit prior to the software upgrade to 5.1

Looks like a software block on accounts not aligned to the country of use.

Missed that...Yes that must be the issue...I guess you are going to have to talk to itunes support.

Or you can do 2 new clean restores of the new software. First restore using the same iTunes username and try to replicate the problem. Then do another restore using your other iTunes username and see if the problem is resolved. Trial and error. Don't just assume it's because apple is blocking your username because it's a US one until you have ruled out all other scenarios. More then likely that is the problem but until you can be 100 percent positive I would try to do a couple restores.

the light will blink with a remote that it's not paired to, but not do anything.
did you try unpairing before you reset?

I didn't try the unpair but I did try the remote app on the iPad and it could not connect.. I think it was frozen.

I now have everything back up and working with the US detail. However the only issue I have is getting she photo stream to work but that appears to be covered in another thread.
