Hi all - new to the forum and after a little advice if ok! I am upgrading my 5,1 mid 2010 and am looking at 2 x X5680 rather than the X5690 as I don't think the speed difference is worth the money!! What I don't know is the memory to go with. I am currently running 16Gb of 1066 DDR3, I know with the X5690 I can use 1333Hz but does anyone know what I should use with the X5680?? I will for the sake of the cost put 128GB in but want to make sure I use the best memory I can :)

Thanks in advance!

A set of 6 DIMMs for a total of 96GB (leaving sockets 4 and 8 empty) will provide a small performance advantage over using 8 DIMMs. However, if your application is memory-hungry and will benefit from having 128GB of RAM instead of 96GB, then install 128GB.

Also, you must reset the NVRAM on your 5,1 after installing the new processor and 1333MHz DIMMs. This will cause the system to recognize the correct speed of your new RAM.

All the 2010 5,1 cMPs came stock with 1333MHz Ram. However, some of the stock CPUs would not allow the RAM to run at full speed and down clocked it 1066MHZ.

These should cost around $20-25 each on eBay . Use only matching modules . six for highest bandwidth . eight for largest capacity . Max speed is 1333 MHz , actual .

Known compatible 16GB modules for Mac Pro 4,1 > 5,1 and factory 5,1 are :

16GB = Samsung M393B2G70AH0-YH9 .

16GB = Samsung M393B2G70BH0-YH9 (low voltage) .

16GB = Micron MT36KSF2G72PZ-1G4 ( low voltage ) .

16GB = Samsung M393B2G70BH0-YK0 (1600 MHz) .

16GB = Nanya NT16GC72C4NB0NL-CG ( low voltage ) .
