Currently running a flashed GTX680, 4K 60Hz under Mojave.

Would a new AMD RX 560 offer any improvement in general system responsivenes? Thinking about buying one so I can run Catalina with DisplayPort working properly. Note I have no need for 3D acceleratio, this system is for digital audio, purely 2D only.

Catalina and digital audio?
Will your plugins still work?
Some do not.
many in the industry are fairly pissed off about all this, I know many project studios running the 5,1...They nor I could ever afford a new Mac Pro.
Most Studios don’t make what they used to.

I have ran Catalina just to check it out,
I would not use Catalina to do audio work on, with the 5,1 ...just saying.
It’s not supported, it has a few issues.
I would never put a paying clients tracks in Catalina.
Or any of my own work for that matter.

Mojave is solid, so is high Serra.
And all my plugins work, all my daws work, even crusty old pro tools...

a new gpu will not increase track counts, or really change much if not pushing it.
pushing the gpu could be video work,
Higher resolution monitors, multi monitors, all can improve workflow.

when I think of system response improvements, disk speed, memory, and cpu come to mind.

I had ran an ultra wide monitor for about a year with a 780ti, it ran well.
I just got a rx580, I could not believe how much better the screen looked.
But the monitor was set up for ati.
So depends on monitors.
but to tell the truth, it’s when I switch the machine to windows, to play games then the better gpu really shines.
And why I upgraded, getting a Vega next.

as far as any system response improvements with a gpu, Imho I would say no...

Supposing your signature is uptodate, I'd recommend the same as @Chips Stephens :
-NVMe blades instead of SATA 2 ssd
-fastest 6-core CPU (X5690)
-you already got 48GB RAM, but installing a 6-core CPU supports RAM speed of 1333mHz instead of 1066mHz.

Sig is old, I’ll update it. Btw I’ve already maxed out the machine with NVMe and dual X5690.

Someone mentioned in another thread that the GTX680 was a bit tired for 4K output, wasn’t really sure what they meant so I started this thread.

Yeah basically I was wondering if a GPU upgrade may help with higher resolutions. I’ve been doing a bit more research and it seems the answer is no.

Thanks for the heads up regarding VST, I’ll look into the requirements for the ones I use.

Purely a hobby at this stage, I won’t be charging anyone for studio time.
