I'm on an iPhone 6, lamenting a switch to an Android yet struggling to find something that's attractive, comfortable to hold, and easy to pocket.

Has anyone switched to a smaller sized Android device? the new Sony XZ1 Compact models are attractive however kinda pricey for what they are, not stock experience either. Thought of the new S8 but boy it's a tall phone...

FWIW, I am considering a 6s or SE as they check off almost every box (need 3.5mm jack) but at this stage might be a bad investment for future iOS updates. I'm still on 10.3.3 and not upgrading to avoid any slowdown/issues.

The S8 is a 5.8" 18:9 screen the Pixel 2 is a 5" 16:9 screen

Yeah. But the actual device size gives a different picture. Those bezels are HUGE.

Wait for the Essential Phone to price drop even further while Andy Rubin is on his leave of absence. Essential is only 4 mm taller than the iPhone 6 and 2 mm shorter than the iPhone X.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact
Apple iPhone SE

That's the only sub 5" phones with decent specs right now. Or just wait another four months for the SE2.

I have been contemplating getting the XZ1C and it's actually my first choice over the Pixel 2, Essential, and iPhone X but not for that price of $500. It should be worth about $350 to me but Sony always overprices them. Sony is going to change their design by CES.

If the Essential drops to $200-$300, I would rather get that over the XZ1C which feels boxy and will look outdated by the time OmniBalance gets phased out for this Mirai design early next year.

the Essential is a really nice looking phone, wish they had a 3.5mm jack though.

I agree the XZ1C should be a $350 phone and if it was today I'd be jumping on it. I can get a SE for ~300 unlocked though not sure if its a smart buy at this stage, running on iOS 11 and beyond. Too soon to tell what Apple will do with the SE 2 design-wise.

T-mobile and band 12 support - check, T-Mobile: (Voice, SMS, MMS, Data (LTE 2,4,12)
3.5mm jack - check
$450 - Drop a zero, check

Size is just hair bigger than iPhone 6 and experience is better with 2GB DRAM and micro SD card slot for expanding storage. Go through the Slickdeals threads.

$2.09 SIM unlock code

ill try to find and play with one in store; frankly I wouldn't mind paying more for another model with mid to higher-end specs

Stock and really close to stock Android doesn't need all that much power to run. If I was spending 450 on a phone I'd get last years Pixel or a Nexus 5x there are deals out there if you're willing to go used I just bought my Nexus 6p on craigslist for $150

I'm keeping an eye on a 1st gen Pixel on Swappa though somewhat concerned about battery capacity/service

I'd love a mini s8/s9 with that display

Thinking about the X Compact for ~250 new...

There are a few qualms I have with the Xperia XZ1 Compact that could be a deal breaker to some.

- $500 price
- Best Buy version lacks the fingerprint scanner
- BB version won't work on Verizon or Sprint
- Sony rid of 2x tap to wake
- Rid of FM radio with RDS
- Outdated design
- Medicore cameras
- Flimsy sim tray

You are better off with the Essential Phone for $400 or less.

With that said, XZ1C is the best compact flagship there is surpassing the iPhone SE with Snapdragon 835 and 4 GB RAM. Has headphone jack and microSD slot to boot.

The SE2 probably gets the 4.7" 7 specs with only 2 GB RAM when iPhones should have 4 GB as minimum after watching OnePlus 5T beat the iPhone X in PhoneBuff's speed test.

XZ1C just doesn't offer much value. Should be priced at $349. It's better than the SE but not $150-$350 better. You can buy three iPhone SEs at Best Buy for one XZ1C and still have some change left.

Essential is a better deal. Just wait for another price drop. Could be $350 this month if it was $400 on Cyber Monday.

I'm struggling to cough up $3-350 for a current SE (64gb, used unlocked) esp if there's a refresh on the horizon. Hope they don't drop the 3.5mm jack

Definitely agree the XZ1C should be around $350 which I'd strongly consider at that point. I am looking at the prev gen X Compact which packs a decent punch, can buy for $280 new

May hold out until after the holidays if prices dip a bit more or something new gets announced at CES.

Hi

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could answer this question: For those who have owned an iPhone 6/7; is the Sony XZ1C phone narrower in width & height than the IP6/7 models (making it easier to grasp)?

I currently own an iPhone 5 & recently purchased an IPhone 8 & find it a little awkward to grasp & hold it so would greatly appreciate some feedback to my question. Thanks!
