Has anyone put 5 hard drives inside their MDD towers? I have 4 in there right now and I am temped in putting one in the open optical drive bay. I have a PCI ATA 100 card so I know I can connect them. My questions are, is the optical drive power supply enough to handle a 3.5 drive (i think yes) and how can i secure the 3.5 inch drive in a 5.25 bay so it doesn't rattle or over heat?

i have put drives in zip bays but never optical. it definitely can power it.. don't know about securely though. and don't you need a optical drive to read/burn stuff?

there are two optical bays in the MDD, the top one is the superdrive on the ata-33 bus and the 5th hard drive would come from a PCI ata100 card. but yes how can i secure the drive is the big question.

The last time I bought a Maxtor, the metal pieces like the ones you listed above were included (along with the IDE cable and some screws). They weren't fancy anti-vibration and all, but they've always done the job for me when mounting HDDs in optical drive slots.

[Edit]: The optical power supply should be the same 4-pin standard that also powers the other HDDs, I'd actually be more concerned with heat than anything else, depending on how much you're planning to use the drives. I once had a B/W tower with 5 drives inside (three on the bottom, one in the Zip drive mount, one velcroed to the top of the optical/Zip mount (if you've never seen the inside of a B/W, this makes no sense) and it got mighty warm in there, so I added a PCI fan to help with venting.

thats from a 5 minute google search, if you look harder for a "3.5 hard drive bracket for 5.25" bay" .. You could find a bracket much less, the '$38.00' price was a Quick search for a bracket ..

thanks for the search, i wonder if i can just my own bracket or something else to elevate the hard drive in place. i want to use that drive my DVD matinee drive, when the 600GB drives come out this year and MTR all my DVDs onto the internal drive and shelve all my DVDs. That's all the drive will be used for.
