I do not know what to say
I was watching a movie and typing a response at the macrumors site
and an error was thrown and a reboot
I hope this was an one time event...

(Central) NY State of mind
I migrated to Yosemite 10.10.4 from Mavericks 10.9.5 a couple weeks ago (I figured I was safe after four major updates). The first day my machine crashed once, then again once the second day. Random times, I wasn't even at the machine, but when I returned it was sitting at the login screen. The third day I got a freeze while working that required a hard power off/on to get out of. But, knock on wood, it's been fine ever since. Mavericks was great - I used to go over 30 days without a reboot - and even then just to install a software update.

Mavericks almost never crashed on me. Yosemite after five hours. :s

Get rid of Avast.
I do like having a virus scanner. Sometimes on the net I get a warning that a threat was blocked. I am open to alternatives but I prefer having a virus scanner.

A good one for your system is ClamXav. Google it for a Mac. Get rid of the other one, which really you don't need on a Mac

Is ClamXav as good as avast? Does it resolve in less crashes?

I would encourage you to try going without a virus scanner of any kind for a week or two.
This would be a test to see if there's something else that is contributing to your crashes.
There still is no active virus in the wild that will affect a Mac in any way.
There are, of course, a few examples of adware/malware, which is easy to root out with the good Malwarebytes (Adware Medic has been renamed).

Avast is the worst among similar utilities. You can only expect problems from its activity.
Besides, a Mac does not need an antivirus at all. :)

But, you apparently have a problem after upgrading to Yosemite (and you are not using Mavericks now! )
Is it caused by Avast - despite your past experience? Maybe it doesn't work as well with Yosemite?
One good way to find out, uninstall Avast, use your system normally for a couple of weeks. Unless you intentionally live dangerously on the internet, you are unlikely to suddenly acquire malware on a Mac. if your problem does not recur, then Avast is gone, too. Seems easy to me!
(I do like Avast, and install it once or twice a year, run a full scan, then immediately uninstall Avast. I have no need for the performance-robbing full-time scanning)
