5 macs per itunes account

Hi, I would like to try OSX server on one of my macs but I would like to know if there's a way for that mac to not be counted as one of the five computers on my itunes account. It would be "serving" contents bought on itunes on said account but the server itself wouldn't be using it.

So, is the server one of the five?

You should be able to move the iTunes Media folder to another drive, either local or on the server. Go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and you will see the path to the iTunes Media Folder. Click "Change…" to browse to a new location. In this case, you wouldn't need to use iTunes on the server at all.

You wouldn't need OS-X server to do this. Any Mac can share it's local volume or folder(s) and set the appropriate permission for access. Another thought is (if you have one) use an Airport Extreme base station and connect an external USB drive for file sharing. (If you have a Time Capsule, you can use either its internal or an external USB drive.)

I thought about doing that but then in order to say, stream a video to an ATV, I would still need to go through a computer running iTunes, right? It's the same than having the library on the computer running iTunes.

Apple should make a dedicated itunes server app or even an actual NAS/iTunes server.

That's true. It would have to stream through the iTunes application. So, as far as I know, you would need to authorize iTunes on the server or host Mac (again, you wouldn't need OS X server to do that). I can't imagine Apple being able to get around the 5 machine limit due to licensing issues.

If you have your own videos, then you wouldn't need to authorize iTunes. That would also apply to DRM free music.
