5 Questions for iPhone owners

Hi all. I'm going to go pick up my first iPhone later today and I just wanted to ask a few quick questions of the experts here. Any help with one or all of the questions is much appreciated.


1. Should I spend the extra 100 bucks on the 16gb version if I don't plan on using it much for mp3's and movies? Or are the apps big and plentiful enough to justify spending the extra money?

2. How hard is it to unlock the iPhone? I consider myself generally competent with computers and instructions. But is there a risk of bricking it and voiding my warranty if I screw it up?

3. About the AT&T plan, their site does not specify if the 450 minutes on the standard plan is for incoming calls or both.

4. Is 109.00/mo really the cheapest deal AT&T offers if I wanted to sign up two phones?

5. If there was one phone you could have or were forced to use instead of the iPhone which would it be and why?

1. If you have the extra 100 I would myselft buy it cause you might build your itunes library faster than you think and then wish you'd got the 16GB when your 8GB is full.

2. I wouldn't unlock the iphone just yet, the SDK for it should be out later this month which will open up alot of apps and such for it. Just use it normally until then when it would be such a risk to try new things on it.

3. I have the 450 anytime plan and it pertains to cell phones outside of cingular and is used in both outgoing/incoming calls. Everyone I talk to is on a Cingular cell so that 450 hardly gets used.

4. Well, family plans start at like 69.00 I believe and then you have the 'mandatory' $20 add-on data/internet/stocks/email for each phone, so your probably correct on that. You can fight the 20 add-on if you buy ur wife an iphone that won't use those features.

5. I upgraded my Sony Ericsson W810i and I loved it. First Sony phone but never had any problems and was a perfect little compact phone, but to each their own. Hope these answer some of your questions.

I upgraded from the same phone. I would still be using it if it weren't for the iPhone. Furthermore, my next phone would be an SE, too. Aside from my iPhone, they make the best phones I've ever used.

ditto! my wife loved that phone so much she upgraded to it, haha! Still has it it'll probably be the next phone in the future for me to.

To the OP: Did you mean unlock, or jailbreak? Unlocking opens up the phone to use on another network, whereas jailbreaking is opening up the phone to install 3rd party apps.

Unlocking carries a greater risk for bricking the phone, though I am not sure how great that risk is using current methods. Doing either will potentially void your warranty. With a jailbreak, doing a restore of the software will remove most (if not all) traces of it ever being done, so barring any major catastrophic failure, you could still get warranty service. As always, use at your own risk.
