Promotion Description. The 500 Millionth Download Promotion (the “Promotion”) is a sweepstakes promotion in which entrants downloading songs through the iTunes Music Store (“iTunes”) will be eligible to win one (1) of 199 iPod minis (4GB model) and one (1) of 199 iTunes song code cards for redemption of fifty (50) songs from iTunes (“iPod mini/50-song card Prize”) (total approx. retail value: U.S. $248.50), or the one (1) grand prize described below (“Grand Prize”):
One (1) iTunes song code card for redemption of 10,000 songs on iTunes, and
Ten (10) iPods, models to be selected by Grand Prize winner, and
Ten (10) iTunes song code cards for redemption of fifty (50) songs from iTunes, and
A trip to see Coldplay in concert. The trip shall include the following for the Grand Prize winner and three (3) guests: 1) concert tickets to a Coldplay concert at a date and location within Apple’s discretion, however, Apple will work with the Grand Prize winner to find a convenient date and location, 2) round trip coach class air transportation from a major airport nearest to the Grand Prize winner’s residence to the location of the concert (Apple reserves the right to substitute ground transportation for air transportation if the Grand Prize winner resides within 200 miles of the concert location), and 3) hotel accommodations for two (2) nights (two rooms, double occupancy, room and tax only; meals, telephone calls and other incidentals not included). All trip expenses not listed above are the responsibility of the Grand Prize winner and his or her guests. If the Grand Prize winner is under the age of 18, he or she must be accompanied by a legal custodian, and any guests of the Grand Prize winner under the age of 18 must also be accompanied by a legal custodian. The Grand Prize winner and all guests must have valid travel documents (e.g., valid passport, visa, photo identification, etc.) prior to departure. (Total approx. retail value of Grand Prize: U.S. $15,385 to $18,385).
One (1) iPod mini/50-song card Prize will be awarded for each 100,000th song downloaded beginning with the 480,100,000th download until iTunes reaches its 500 millionth download. For the 500 millionth download, one lucky winner will win the Grand Prize.
How To Enter. You will automatically be entered into the Promotion by: 1) downloading a song from iTunes (any free downloads will be deemed an ineligible entry); or 2) a free alternative means of sending an e-mail to Apple at itunes500@apple.com via the iTunes “Tell a Friend” feature (a song download or Tell a Friend e-mail will be deemed an “Entry(ies)”). The “Tell a Friend” feature can be easily accessed at iTunes by selecting a song, and clicking the “Tell a Friend” link that is displayed for that song. One Entry will be automatically submitted for each song downloaded or Tell a Friend e-mail sent. The Promotion begins following the downloading of the 480,000,000th iTunes song, and ends with the downloading of the 500 millionth Entry (“End Date”). Only Entries submitted in this time period will be accepted.
Eligibility. In order to be eligible, entrants must be 13 years of age or older, and a legal resident of one of the 50 United States, including Washington, D.C., Austria, Belgium, Canada (excluding the Province of Quebec), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. Entrants must enter the Promotion through the iTunes Music Store accessible in your country of residence. There is one Promotion, and the Rules in your country of residence govern your participation in the Promotion. Entrants under 18 should obtain a parent’s or guardian’s consent before participating. Entries are limited to individual consumers only; commercial enterprises and business entities are not eligible. Directors, officers, employees, contractors and agents of Apple, its subsidiaries, affiliates, resellers, or advertising or promotional agencies and members of their immediate families (defined as children, parents, siblings or spouses) are not eligible to participate in the Promotion. To participate, entrants must: 1) have a computer with iTunes software installed (iTunes software is available for free at: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/), 2) have Internet access; and 3) submit an Entry.
Tell a Friend E-mail Entries. The authorized account holder of the e-mail address used to enter will be deemed to be the entrant. The “authorized account holder” is the natural person assigned an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the address. Potential winners may be required to show proof that they are the authorized account holder or the entrant. The use of any automated launching or entry software or any other mechanical or electronic means that permits the entrant to automatically enter repeatedly is prohibited. Mechanically generated entries will be discarded and may result in total and permanent disqualification from the Promotion.
How You Win. Winners will be determined by the order of the Entries received. One (1) iPod mini/50-song card Prize will be awarded for each Entry sent immediately following the 480,099,999th song downloaded, until iTunes reaches its 500 millionth Entry (i.e., one (1) iPod mini/50-song card Prize will be given away for the 480,100,000th Entry, 480,200,000th Entry, ... 499,900,000th Entry). For the 500 millionth Entry, the winner will receive the Grand Prize. In the event that more than one entrant would be a winner based on the simultaneous timing of entries, one entrant will be randomly selected from those entrants as the winner. Each entrant’s chances of winning are dependent upon the number of Entries received and the timing of Entries. Each entrant is eligible to win only one (1) iPod mini/50-song card Prize or one (1) Grand Prize.

yep, and the official press release here:

Apple Kicks Off iTunes Music Store Countdown to Half a Billion Songs
Live 8 Performances Now Available on iTunes
CUPERTINO, California—July 5, 2005—Apple® today kicked off its countdown to half a billion songs sold on the iTunes® Music Store with an online song counter so music fans around the world can participate in the race to purchase and download the 500 millionth song. As part of the countdown, Apple is giving away an iPod® mini and an iTunes gift card for 50 songs to the iTunes customer who purchases the winning song at each 100,000 interval. The person who downloads the 500 millionth song will win the grand prize—10 iPods of their choice to share with family and friends, an iTunes gift card for 10,000 songs and an all-expenses paid trip for four to see Coldplay on their world tour.

Apple today also announced the availability of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “The Long and Winding Road” on the iTunes Music Store. Both songs were recorded live at this past weekend’s Live 8 benefit concerts featuring U2 and Sir Paul McCartney. Proceeds from the sales of these one-time-only performances will benefit debt relief in Africa.

“As we prepare to cross this major milestone of half a billion songs, we want to thank our customers, the artists and the music labels who have helped make iTunes a global success,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of applications. “iTunes continues to be the world’s number one online music store featuring the world’s best digital music including special performances such as the Live 8 concerts.”

With Apple’s legendary ease of use, pioneering features such as integrated Podcasting support, iMix playlist sharing, seamless integration with iPod and groundbreaking personal use rights, the iTunes Music Store is the best way for Mac® and PC users to legally discover, purchase and download music online. The iTunes Music Store features more than 1.5 million songs from the major music companies and over 1,000 independent record labels, 10,000 audiobooks, gift certificates and exclusive music not found anywhere else online.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital music revolution with its iPod portable music players and iTunes online music store.

Cool prizes. Especially the coldplay tickets :)

damn, they're really moving those mini's out aren't they. get a free one when u buy a mac for students, and giving away 199 of 'em in this contest.

the grand prize is nice i think, eh i don't know about seeing Coldplay (i like them, but i think one of their concerts would just make me wanna fall asleep), but 10 iPods of your choice and 10,000 songs is not too shabby, plus another 500 to keep or give away

17" PowerBook would have been a better grand prize.

Of course if I win and get to talk to Steve, I'd probably care less about the PowerBook. :p

You get 10 iPods of your choice. Choose 10 60 GB iPods and then eBay'em and buy yourself a Powerbook. You could even keep one for yourself. :)

yup, plus giving away iPods work alot better in a promotion for iTunes than a Powerbook, especially for those people who completely ignore Apple's computer side of their business.

Ebay the iPods would be a easy way to get any Mac you want. And you can talk to Steve. Any chance of a widget to help track the countdown to increase your odds in winning?

anyone buying music from iTunes will i'm sure, won't they have it bannered around the music store?

but still, iTunes markets better alongside iPods than Powerbooks.

100 Million grand prize was much better...
Would rather have a Powerbook than a trip to Coldplay.

Sure, I like Coldplay, but that is something that happens once and is over with...plus, they don't give you (a)backstage passes/meet-and-greet, (b)dinner or food expenses

The Powerbook prize would "last" much longer.

But, I guess you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth....they don't have to give out anything. :)

Looks like the counter is just throwing out numbers at a set increment, seems to have no relation to the number being bought at all.

Although most of us here on MR would probably rather have a shiny new Mac I'm sure Apple's intent with the prizes was to keep them related to music.

yeah, i was suprised no backstage/meet and greet passes.

On the webpage, in the main text (not the rules), it says
a trip for you and three guests to see Coldplay on its current tour, with front-row seats (subject to availability), and “back-stage” passes for a meet n’ greet with the band (guaranteed availability).

we need those really rockin graphs they had up on the last promo. those were great

i dig the grand prize. keep one or two of the iPods (it would be a nice collector's item) and ebay the rest. i feel CERTAIN that they will be engraved w/ some "500Mth" iTunes song of some sort on the back, so i'm sure they would go for a premium on ebay.

but the 10k songs on itms?? SWEEET. i would run out of stuff i wanted to buy that's currently in the store, but you'd know that you could get any new release that you wanted as soon as it came out.

and as for the coldplay tix, i like them alright, but i know a few women that would go ape$#!+ to get front row tix & back stage passes. worth winning right there... ;)

(UPDATE: The URL now works, as of 4:30pm EDT... interesting....)

So here's something interesting. I read about this story at MacMinute after seeing it here. There's a link that is supposedly to the press release, and that link is to this URL:

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/jul/05itms_beatles.html

Look at that again. iTMS. Beatles. Beatles? It's possible that this simply refers to the Live 8 performance of "Sgt. Pepper"... but the correct press release URL includes "live8" in the page name instead of "beatles".

The page gives out a 404. I wonder if MacMinute inadvertently jumped the gun on something. It'd be strange for them to simply fabricate a faulty URL.

Let the speculation begin.

++ Can you say unoriginal?

I mean how about free iPod updates for the next 5 generations?
Or how about iTunes for life? All you can eat.

They never say when you have to choose your iPods. There are also no prize must be redeemed by so-and-so-date rules.

Maybe you could get iPod updates for the next 10 generations.

join the club iAlan, there are still a lot of people that cant buy from the iTMS! I wish apple would get to a few other countries, there is a lot of songs that im dying to bye!!! :D :D
