On all of the models in the Apple Store, most additions will raise the ship time to "1-3 business days", but ONLY the 500GB hard drive raises the ship time to either 3-5 days (17" and 20" models) or 5-7 days (24" model). None of the other hard drive options cause this issue. The 500GB drive (not sure if it's the same model) does not cause any greater delay on the Mac Pro. Any idea why this might be?

500GB HD significantly slows down iMac ship rate for some reason

The wait time went to 7-10 business days and now it is 9-11 business days. I think the server configuration also uses the 500GB drive. I too would like to figure out what is causing this significant supply chain slow down because I am thinking about getting an iMac and I want one with the 500GB drive.
Yeah, it isn't the default hard drive in ANY Apple products - is there some other place that the 500GB drives are going to?
I know there are no other real supply chain issues (that I know of) pointing to new iMacs in the immediate future, but maybe that's where the drives are going as a default storage option. That, or the 500GB drive will be standard in the Mac Pro soon. Or both.
It's very strange that only the 500 GB hard drive option does this. I'm sure it's inconsequential but they seem to be having some trouble getting those drives for the iMac.
It has been like this for about a week...maybe they are starting to use them as a the base HD in a future release eh eh
Now the wait time is 9-11 days for a 500GB and 2-3 weeks for a 750GB drive on an iMac. I wonder who is sucking up all the available big drives. I won't order an iMac until I can get it with a larger drive, because I want to do a lot of video work.

Yes. A few weeks ago when I posted this thread, the 500GB HD raised the delay from 24 hours to either 3-5 or 5-7 days. Now it's 7-10. Back then, the 750GB HD didn't cause any delay at all, and now suddenly that delays you by 2-3 weeks. The delays have been growing gradually over the past several weeks.
I believe he's implying that because there appears to be a shortage of larger hard drives available for the iMacs, there may be a chance that some of the supply is being used for a new iMac in production that is very close to being released.
IIRC, iMacs use Seagate drives (My Mac Pro does) and when I was trying to find one for my Macbook, there was hardly any instock at any online store

Well, considering that you say they are running low on them elsewhere the third alternative seems even more unlikely

ahhh... hmm, well... are you able to find those drives online from resellers?
At the German store, a 500 (or 750) disk will introduce a 3 day delay for the 17 & 20" iMac...and a 7-10 day delay for the 24".
Doubt its because of a new model, probably just an order backlog on the 24" and a warehouse full of built & boxed ready to ship 24" with 250G disk. Too much hassle to unpack them and change the disk....

I would agree, but the fact that this delay has been present for several weeks and is growing makes me think otherwise.

apple doesn't have warehouses full of imacs. they use a near direct distribution model. the computers are rarely waiting in anywhere to be shipped. it would seem that this pattern indicates a shift in product usage, i don't know that this means a new machine, but would imagine that there are few alternatives if the drives are otherwise available.

If people are ordering them faster than they can make them then the delivery time will increase...its possible they misread the market and don't have production capacity for that model variant (and at the same time made too many with 250G disks)...its also possible that they have reallocated production capacity to something else.
If they are stockpiling for a new imac, then a three week delay is smack dab in the middle of iphone territory.
