512 megs of video ram in xp on a 2.4 ghz sr MBP?

Apologies if this is a repeat - one can imagine how searching would fail.


I have a new SR 2.4 macbook pro, and have installed 4 gigs of ram (from OWC).

Everything works fine, however, in XP sp2 (bootcamp), the machine only sees 3 gigs of system memory, and -512- megs of video ram.


Has anyone else seen anything like this?

For whatever reason, XP only sees 3GB if you have 4GB on any of Apple's machines, and a few other PC OEM machines as well. Vista fixes this particular issue.

As for VRAM, it is displaying total VRAM available (both dedicated, and RAM shared with system memory).

The 32-bit versions of Windows (including Vista) can only properly take advantage of 3 GB of RAM. XP only bothers showing 3 GB, while Vista will show the full 4 GB, even though it's really only using 3 GB. (Technically, anything over the 3 GB mark is reserved for system use, wether it needs it or not.)

And yes, it will show the video RAM available both native and 'shared system'. This doesn't mean that 256 MB of your main memory is actually in use by the video chip, just that it's available should you need it.
