I'll believe it when Apple reports it. Until then my guess is as good as anyone elses, and a guess is just a guess, even if its printed in the paper. It's not fact until Apple says so.

anyone know what the record for such a device is? What did the Razor or Star Tac do when they first hit the market?

I am sure its a record. I cannot recall any phone that thousands of people across the country waited in line for hours or days for. Then again, no other phone has had a specific sale date and time like the iPhone. But if I had to guess, the RAZR probably sold 200K units in the first 2 months, not 2 days.

If that figure is accurate, that's a conservative $228M in gross sales for Apple, assuming a 40% markup that's about $91M net for Apple. Not a bad weekend.

lol, yeah, and SJ is like "nice, now I can afford that extension on my house I wanted..."

Apple May Have Sold 200,000 IPhones, Meeting Highest Prediction

Thats a little on the high end:

Apple May Have Sold 200,000 IPhones, Meeting Highest Prediction

July 2 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc.'s initial iPhone sales may have met analysts' top projections, suggesting Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs will reach his goal of making mobile phones as profitable to the company as computers and the iPod.

Shoppers bought as many as 200,000 units the first day after the iPhone went on sale June 29, according to Global Equities Research in San Francisco. Analysts' estimates ranged from 50,000 to 200,000 units.

200,000 was the high-end prediction for Friday only. The 525,000 is an estimate for the entire weekend.

That's a nice step toward the goal of 10 million over the next 18 months.

Well in that case I can't wait to look at my portfolio in the morning - on my iPhone:)

thats awesome
however they can prob double if not triple that number if it was unlocked

I agree, but it's more than just an unlocking issue for the phones to work cross providers. Remember, there's iTunes activation integration and visual voice mail (random access voice mail) features that need to be developed for other providers to support iPhone's features.
