Now that the app store sorts iPad apps by release date, it is possible, albeit somewhat time consuming to go in to each of the twenty app categories and sort by date to get the total number of apps available. Using this method, writing down the counts and adding them up in pcalc, I found that there are 5286 apps available as of 10am edt. That's impressive to have so many apps less than a month after launch. Here is my pcalc tape. The entries are in order as categories listed in the app store starting with books and ending with weather. There are 1392 games.
