Finally a mainstream media streamer that supposedly supports AV1 hardware decode. Other differences over non-Max version is 40% faster performance (benefits console emulation), 2GB vs 1.5GB RAM and WIFI6 support (too bad not WIFI6E with new 6GHz spectrum). Looking forward to picking one up for ~$35 on Black Friday and trying it out.

I will never own another Amazon multimedia device. I've used a fire tv and found the interface stuttered and was unintuitive. Bought my little one a kids fire tablet and it stuttered to an almost unusable state from day 1. Their software is garbage.

Amazon has a bunch of models at different price points. A bunch are mediocre but a few are outstanding like the Fire TV Stick 4K that has the freedom to do things like run emulators and has browser support that Apple TV 4K lack. Plays Apple TV+ shows without crashing unlike on the Chromecast with Google TV (some shows play fine while others crash so everyone suspect it's an Apple app issue). And, can run apps unlike the Rokus. It's not a brand for the lazy that don't do their research. Looking forward to ETA Prime rundown to see if it can run Dolphin emulation.

I can understand that sentiment. I bought the first gen Fire TV stick and it was indeed almost unusable. However...
The latest generation of devices are head and shoulders beyond those early models.

Maybe I need to give them another try before I write them off, but my experience to this point hasn't been good. I find their OSes to be dumbed down versions of better software. One thing I will never use again though is their version of Android that's on tablets. That is a total train wreck.
