55% cpu for inactive program

Traktor DJ3 just being open was eating 55% cpu on my new powerbook.

Is there any advice you guys have for avoiding dropouts by bolstering my system resources?

Would running the audio files from an external fw800/400 drive improve performance?

Currently the program, audio files and destination for recording are the same drive ...

It wasn't being used but it was taking up 55% of system resources. If it's a one-off, my first steps would be to quit the app, repair permissions from Disk Utility, restart and reopen the app, after maybe checking the developer's site for any updates.
