I did a search on this forum and only found one thread about it (albeit a good thread).

The problem with the ARCTIC Accelero Xtreme+ is that it is rather tall.

I run a dual GPU configuration with my GTX670 and my 5870 got a little louder with 10.9 for some reason (openCL stuff? who knows). It is currently louder than anything else in my computer.

One problem may be that the 5870 cooler intake is about 4mm away from the bottom of the GTX670 (which I prefer in slot 2). This may be requiring a higher blower RPM.

So basically: I'm looking for an aftermarket cooler for the 5870 that works with the mac pro. I'd prefer a lower profile and similar cooling to stock with lower noise ( I do not OC ). There are options out there which seem great but are clearly not compatible

Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus is the best solution for 5870, whisper quiet, perfect build quality.

Only down side is that you must sacrifice second PCIe x16 slot. If you for some reason need two x16 slots, put 5870 in second one, and sacrifice two x4 slots.

This is AC current model model for 5870.

I need the 2nd slot, and one of my 4x slots :)

I'm looking at more low-profile options, maybe even passive cooling (though that scares me as I see the furmark tests freezing up).

The issue I had with other 2-slot coolers when I wanted to put one on my 5870 was that the VRM cooling available was poor on many of them. That is why I settled on the Arctic Cooler that I did (although that exact model is discontinued and a better one is out now).

You could try a water cooled closed loop (GPU heat skink and120mm rad but that won't cool your VRMs.

Are you sure it isn't actually the Expansion bay fan being noisy? When my 7950 heats up, it is the expansion bay fan that is the noisiest component.

Unfortunately it is, I even opened the case and checked

I even have a supplementary 120mm fan in the PCIe compartment to improve airflow.
