Just took out a 5870 and installed a RX 580, same slot, power and DP cable connected. There's no signal to the monitor. Is there something else I have to do?

Is it because I have FileVault enabled?

First of all, the 5870 and 580 use different power connections. Did you procure a nmini 6-pin to 8-pin power cable for the 580?

If so, understand that you won't get a signal during the boot process as the 580 lacks an EFI ROM. So you wouldn't see anything until your desktop (or login screen) loads. If you use FileVault then you won't see anything period, as the FileVault password entry screen is part of the EFI environment.

If you're sure you're not running FileVault and you are still getting no signal even after the machine has booted then you should try another output on the card if possible--DVI or HDMI.

Yes, I have installed a dual mini 6pin to 8 pin power cable. I'm aware of the lack of boot screen unfortunately.

I just turned off FileVault and the disk is being decrypted. Once finished, I'll swap the cards again. Is there anything else I need to do?
[doublepost=1532151453][/doublepost]What if I get my 580 flashed for mac? Would I then be able to turn on FileVault?

MacVidCards doesn't offer a flashing service for the RX 580. Your best option is to either flash a Nvidia GTX 680 yourself or purchase a 780 from MVC after he implements 4k support. Those cards are the best cards you can get without having to update a driver everytime you update Mac OS. There was an unbranded GTX 780 EFI ROM leaked on this forum a little while ago but it seems like the uploader took down the download link due to the community whining (makes sense right) and at the request of the original creator...

I had no idea. All these little quirks.... this is another reason I should do the pixla mod to keep the 5870 in there as well.

Thanks for the info.

Remove the 5870 make more sense for normal daily use.

Of course, if you need FileVault, then co-install 5870 with RX580 is a solution indeed.

You forgot GT 640 and GT 630 from MVC . These cards need no additional power.

Those video cards are honestly garbage, I don't know why anyone would use those unless they are really desperate to upgrade from a 5770 or something. The flash a GTX 680 route is still cheaper if you don't mind buying power cables.

These cards are meant for boot screen aside an installed RX 580. Ideal because they need no power.
