I noticed on Saturday that all my data connections are now showing as 5G instead of LTE. This is on Verizon using a 12 Pro Max on iOS 15 Beta 2. Even my home cell booster from Verizon is showing up as 5G on my phone. I know these networks aren't all 5G all of a sudden. My area barely has LTE.

Genuine question, and I might be missing something here, so apologies in advance, but what is the problem? All you can do is, if it is displaying incorrectly, report it (I’m assuming you already have) and hope that Apple fix the issue? Don’t hold your breath though, this is Apple after all

Wish I lived in a 5G area as well as an aside…

You are in fact, all of a sudden, now in a Verizon low band 5G coverage area. Enjoy! Your wife’s phone may need VZ to resend the network provisioning to make the phone see 5G and connect to it.

The coverage map typically lags by at least a month. So new 5G coverage may not show up for awhile yet.

Nope. And it only shows on my phone which is running iOS 15. My wife's 12 Pro Max on iOS 14 still shows LTE.

Have her go to Settings ‪→‬ General ‪→‬ About. It’ll prompt a carrier settings update if there’s one available, and check in Settings ‪→‬ Cellular ‪→‬ Cellular Data Options if 5G is enabled.

Where I live, pretty much central, there is no 5G anywhere near me. Even at the top end of the biggest town it doesn’t exist. My town itself isn’t even on the roadmap to ever have it. And in fact we only just had 4G a couple of years ago. And that’s not reliable. Maybe it’s the area I am in, but mobile coverage is absolutely crap

I use 5G every day and all I know is this: If your city has good 4G coverage and decent up/down speeds, 5G is not necessary, the added power draw will not bring extra joy.
But in crowded areas on weekends, 5G signals do offer a much stabler connection tho.

First question would be what network are you on?

Second would be what big town it is that doesn’t have any 5G coverage on any network? Perhaps your idea of a big town and mine are different…

you should be able to go into field test mode and see if you're actually on 5g

Simplest way is to open Ookla Speedtest, it accurately signals whether it’s a 5G or LTE test.
