hi all,

I'm happy to share a project that I've been working on for a while to turn an classic iMac G4 into something we can use daily with latest setups.

the journey started in 2021 when I got my 17inch iMac G4 from local craigslist in Jersey City. it was sitting there since then b/c the 17inch is way to small to be realistic for casual use, let alone serious work horse when wfh.

so the goal has been pretty clear: 24 or 27inch + latest chip. I had idea of converting 24-inch iMac via the VESA mount. However, the lack of support as external monitor meant I can't connect company/work laptop to it. so the design landed at 27inch display.

the next one year in 2022/2023 was about researching on parts and alternative. monitors and displays tried but didn't work including Dell Ultra Sharp 24inch, 27 inch; Samsung 32inch M8 smart monitor in white (too heavy for 17inch arm).

with a lot of failed attempted, I know 17inch arm is not going to make it to work. Lucky, I was able to land a 20inch's arm with bigger load. Instead of mounting a finished product, my 3d modeling skill has grow better to a point that I can start playing around with my own monitor covers. Also the fact that I prefer a slim design meant only Samsung M8 smart monitor like setup of separating monitor and driver board is the way to go.

After a lot of wasted 3d prints, cnc trial and error, here's the 5K 27inch iMac G4 with Retina display and Mac mini chips.

So here's the 5K 27inch M2 chip equipped iMac G4. Enjoy!

This is amazing. I’m looking to do this also with a 20” G4, either with my M8 or from a 27” 5K iMac monitor with a cheap control board. Do you have more info on your process? Would you sell your monitor cover?

This looks incredible! Awesome modding job. Can the Lamp base be refurbished? Obviously your buying used/broken G4s, can the plastic be renewed to look crisp white?

If the DVD drive door could somehow still be collapsible to reveal ports for USB sticks etc that would be fun too! :D

Amazing! Exactly what I’d like to do if I could find a 20inch at a not insane price!
So yours started as a 17inch but has the arm switched with one from a 20? How stable is it with the larger screen? I believe the base on the 20s was also heavier than the 17s to make them more stable, do you have any stability issues with your setup?

tied up with customized order and also a new design of the iMac with the white and clear blaze and didn't get a chance to revisit here.
the monitor cover took a lot of effort and R&D budget, multiple iterations of cnc and different materials. it's hard to price them. shoot me an email at my website and we can discuss further there.

that's part of the plan with customized PCB board currently developing. Obviously costly, so need to keep the project alive and fund future development.

yeah, I didn't measure them yet. I have some spare 20inch model available, they felt a lot heavier. but, 17inch's base works fine, no risk of tilting in any angle I move the monitor.

the main issue with 17inch version is just the arm not strong enough to hold anything more than 7lbs.

no stability issue, having been using the computer for personal iMac mini inside or as external monitor for company's 16inch MacBook Pro for almost six months now. works pleasantly well.

it sits on my desk in my living room. everyday, when I enter the room with sunlight filled and a 27inch iMac G4 stands there welcoming, it feels delighted very morning.

I believe so, it can be cleaned, even sanded and repainted if putting extra effort.
