hi all,
I'm happy to share a project that I've been working on for a while to turn an classic iMac G4 into something we can use daily with latest setups.
the journey started in 2021 when I got my 17inch iMac G4 from local craigslist in Jersey City. it was sitting there since then b/c the 17inch is way to small to be realistic for casual use, let alone serious work horse when wfh.
so the goal has been pretty clear: 24 or 27inch + latest chip. I had idea of converting 24-inch iMac via the VESA mount. However, the lack of support as external monitor meant I can't connect company/work laptop to it. so the design landed at 27inch display.
the next one year in 2022/2023 was about researching on parts and alternative. monitors and displays tried but didn't work including Dell Ultra Sharp 24inch, 27 inch; Samsung 32inch M8 smart monitor in white (too heavy for 17inch arm).
with a lot of failed attempted, I know 17inch arm is not going to make it to work. Lucky, I was able to land a 20inch's arm with bigger load. Instead of mounting a finished product, my 3d modeling skill has grow better to a point that I can start playing around with my own monitor covers. Also the fact that I prefer a slim design meant only Samsung M8 smart monitor like setup of separating monitor and driver board is the way to go.
After a lot of wasted 3d prints, cnc trial and error, here's the 5K 27inch iMac G4 with Retina display and Mac mini chips.
So here's the 5K 27inch M2 chip equipped iMac G4. Enjoy!
