I just got Tomb Raider for my 5k imac and it is in the process of downloading. I am just wondering from a performance perspective, the does the imac 5k compete with the ps4? Specifically for this game and in general as well. I am quite aware that the ps4 Tomb Raider they gave a game a cosmetic "facelift" if must it call it for the ps4 version. I had the ps3 version and I am just wondering if I am going to see a decent jump in graphics. The reason I am asking is that when I purchased my imac 5k last week, the salesman was talking about the how great the amd graphics card was. He told me that this new amd is "game changing" and that was one of the reasons Apple switched to amd this year instead of nvida. If this is true, I might hold off for a ps4 for longer than I intended. (Until later this year when Uncharted 4 and the new Need for Speed are released of course) Gta V is coming next month as well I am just wondering if the 5k will look just as good and if not better than the ps4.

Thanks in advance.

It'll give you some sense of what to expect out of it. Even if it does have a decent graphics card, it's tough to drive almost any game at 4k, let alone 5k, especially with a mobile graphics card.

Did you get the base m290x or the m295x?

Either way you're looking at performance that is either equal to slightly better than the PS4. However you also have a much higher resolution screen you're trying to drive. At 1080p things will run great but trying to run things at 4k will likely be less than satisfactory.

the older 2012 Imac with 680MX already smokes ps4 in terms of performance, so anything newer is even better. Tomb Raider for example runs @1440p with very high frame rate and very high settings with the 680MX.

It's a helluva lot better. The GPUs in the retina iMacs can push any game at 1080p-1440p with high or ultra settings solidly. None of the current crop of consoles can quite touch that. Even the little Alienware Alpha is more powerful than the PS4 or Xbox One at 1080p.

But you are right about one thing, it won't be able to push 4k gaming, let alone 5k. The GPUs required to do that are currently about as long as your arm, require a ton of power, and cost around $1000 a pop. There isn't an All-In-One that can match that.
