5K issue with desktop pic and dock

I have a 5k Mac and within the last couple of weeks randomly after start up (restarting doesn't always cure it) the desktop pic is around 2/3 the size it should be and is tucked in to top left side of the screen plus the dock totally disappears.

I can get the dock to show up on the left hand side of the screen but not the bottom.

I'm not sure if it coincides with a recent software update which is now 10.14.6

any thoughts?

Did you install the 10.14.6 Supplemental Update already?

Yes a couple of days ago, I kinda hoped this was a response to this issue, alas it didn't sort it as it happened about 20 mins ago

In that case you may be looking at a hardware failure. A visit to genius or service might clarify.
I have not seen something like this on mine and I am also through all the updates.
