Currently use TBMBP to 5k monitor, which has Intel 550 GPU. This is a stronger GPU than one in mini, and I find the performance can drop sometimes if things get busy. Anyone have much experience on mini? Wondering how it compares.

Went to the Apple store today, played with the Mac mini on display with the i5 processor and 8GB of RAM, connected to the LG UltraFine 5K display.

Had Final Cut playing unrendered 4K footage whilet having a plethora of apps open on top. The UI was still smooth on Safari, Maps, etc. Photos had a little bit of choppiness animating between the photo and edit view, but that’s about it.

Sort of on topic, one of the reasons I’m curious about the new MM is feasibility of it being superior to MBP for certain apps on the 5k monitor as well. For instance noticed in affinity photo that raw processing is heavily thread dependant and so the dual core on MBP is a bottleneck.

But, apps like Pixelmator Pro advertise themselves as relaying heavily on GPU acceleration, so could I actually run into a slowdown here when running 5k or is there enough overhead that the GPU slice as it were for the acceleration is catered for, while the extra threads from CPU show an overall benefit? Wondering if anyone has any insight into this.

Not a heavy pro user anyway, but would of course want experience to be an upgrade!
