iPhone 5S Battery Life nearly unusable on 9.1

Ever since Friday, the battery life on my 5S has become nearly useless. If I'm out of the house for longer than 4 hours the thing is nearly dead and it's a phone I had replaced a little over a month ago by the Genius Bar. I upgraded to 9.1 a few days before Friday but it's been constant through the weekend with the phone running very hot and the battery stats registering programs that run in the background for 20 minutes as a cause of the drop. Even low power mode means I'm losing 1% per 10 minutes on standby.

Anyone have any ideas?

Do you have the Facebook app installed? There is currently an issue with Facebook staying active in the background at all times which is causing massive battery drain. Facebook has acknowledge the issue and are supposedly looking into a fix.

I downgraded my 5S to 9.0.2 just for that reason. 9.1 was worse.

I have an iPhone 5S (work phone) running iOS 9.1 and the battery is AMAZING...it can sit in standby for 24 hours and not lose a single % (as it does EVERY weekend). SO, that would tell me that 9.1 is not the cause of your problems and is, in fact, related to either an app or hardware fault in your phone. I have most of Google's apps installed and not much else, but the Google app runs location in the background and that doesn't seem to even phase the battery. Outside of that it's just normal Apple apps.

Sounds like you need to restore the software. If it still does it then set up as a new phone. Something is obviously amiss.

Try this:

• Make a backup of your phone on iCloud or iTunes just in case (enable backup encryption to keep your passwords in case you need to recover from your backup)
• Delete all your email/contacts/calendar accounts. Basically, you want to have an empty Mail, Contacts, Calendars entry in your settings
• Sing out of iTunes & App Stores
• Sign out of iCloud. Confirm that you want to delete contacts information and any other warning you receive
• Deactivate Facetime
• Deactivate iMessage
• Reboot your phone
• Sing into iCloud
• Activate FaceTime, iMessage
• Sing into your iTunes & App Stores
• Reconfigure your email accounts

This all seems like a lot of work but it shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

I have an iPhone 6 plus and when I updated to 9.1, I went from 2 days battery life to half a day. I restored 3 times (twice in DFU mode), I deleted Facebook and a bunch of other apps but kept having the same problem. Finally, I figured that some iOS process could be the cause of the battery drain. Email, App Store, FaceTime, iCloud and iMessage were all good suspects... So I reset them all!

Luckily, it worked...

I think you've got a problem. This is my actual battery with iOS 9.1 but for me, battery is worse than on iOS 8.

That first screenshot has some numbers that would be considered well above average even for a 6 or a 6s, let alone a smaller phone like a 5s.

when u got a problem its logical to start trying things when nothing else works, ESPECIALLY, when u have freedom to revert whenever if wanted, & theres these things called itunes & icloud backups..theres no risk whatsoever, as well as the usual release thread for it.

Thanks for the tips everyone! I tried this but sadly it doesn't seem to be the root issue for me. I suspect it has something to do with the cellular modem in it because if I lose data I have to do a hard reset to get it back. Going to see if the genius bar will replace it yet again.

Apple replaced the phone, I did a fresh restore only keeping messages and I'm running with only my necessary apps but the thing still won't last longer than 6 hours out of the house even after the 9.2 update.

Brightness is down to 25% and I keep Bluetooth disabled and am on top of wifi. Even putting it in low-power mode doesn't change anything.

Anyone have any ideas?

Apple replaced the phone, I did a fresh restore only keeping messages and I'm running with only my necessary apps but the thing still won't last longer than 6 hours out of the house even after the 9.2 update.

Brightness is down to 25% and I keep Bluetooth disabled and am on top of wifi. Even putting it in low-power mode doesn't change anything.

Anyone have any ideas?

That's what's odd. It shifts all the time but it's listing Facebook at 17% with 10 minutes on screen but 1.5 hours in the background and Safari at 19% with only 6 minutes on screen.

I would suggest uninstalling Facebook and using the mobile site. That might help. The Safari thing I can't help much with, aside from asking if you'd be willing to try a content blocker like Focus to see if blocking third party scripts helps with the battery use there.

Set it up as a new device. Something with your restore file must be causing the problems.
