iPod 5th Gen iPod wont show up in iTunes

i got a Mac and it shows up on my desktop but it wont show up in itunes. yes i have tried resetting it multiple times and forcing it into disk mode but nothing is helping. i can sometimes get it to play but it has a very slow response time. of course my itunes is the latest version but im not sure about the software on the iPod. the thing is i cant check for updates on the iPod or restore it because it wont show up in itunes!!
