6 core or 12 core for audio

So I'm doing mainly mixing in pro tools//logic. With instances of melodyne, maschine, and kontakt. Around 40-60 tracks, with 4-6 plugs on each (not actually but lets pretend)

How'd that run on each machine?

I'd recommend the 12 core to give yourself plenty of headroom, so to speak.
Max out the memory and install a SSD for your apps.

Yes, I agree with Bubba Satori. Get the 12-core if you're planning on using a lot of native plugins and soft synths. However, if you're using DSP cards for most of your plugins, like Pro Tools HD or Universal Audio, then the base model Mac Pro will work fine.

For your samplers, like Kontakt and Mashine, HD speed is more important than CPU speed. So put your sample libraries on HDs using raid 0, or even better, SSDs if you can afford them.

Noob question, but just to clarify, you mean make the SSD the OS/boot/app drive, and use HDD's for bulk storage right?

I'd say, 40 tracks, 2-3 plugs per track managed by the CPU. Others on the track managed by UAD. Then 1 instance of melodyne (at a time I suppose I can print),and 1 instance of maschine and 1 instance of kontakt

I will have two SSDs in the machine. For OS/apps, and for some essential sample content.

I mean I'd think a 6 core would be able to do that easily...

OGS, I'm in the same situation. I have a PT HD System that I'm upgrading to the latest MacPro. I was thinking about getting the Quad Core system, but since my mixes may consist of Native plugins I might as well just go the 12-core since I'm also doing Final Cut pro and other intense graphic rendering stuff as well. It comes down to money. I would buy the 3.33 6 core over the 2.4 12 core, the best machine being the 3.06GHz. I have the 2.93 and never have to worry about CPU bottlenecks, ever (for pro apps). If you can get somewhere around 24GB RAM it's really nice and inexpensive. SSD would help if you store Logic and your apps/OS on it.

I'm going with a hexcore, 24gb ram, and SSD. Will sell next year if I have to. It will hold value
