6-core or 8-core - 4k video editing??

I'll be editing 4k in either Premiere CC or FCX and Resolve from either a Sony FS700R or Red Epic/Dragon (6k in that case). Any hard data as to what I'm gaining going to 8-cores, if anything? 12 cores is out if the budget, but I'd like to be editing in real time at 4k. I'm a professional photographer as we'll, so heavy Lightroom and PS work.

The rest of my config will be D700/1TB/32GB

What do you guys think, is there enough gain to justify another $1500??
 
Didn't Premier CC and FCX both add support for Dual GPU OpenCL acceleration? in which case the D700s should be doing you a lot of good

You will need to factor in very fast external storage as well. No way you are keeping even a half days footage on that single 1TB internal drive! (Sorry you may have storage already but I didn't see it mentioned)

CPU requirements may depend on what codec you will be using. Resolve will use those dual GPUs quite nicely in a lot of cases, but if you're rendering/transcoding to a codec that isn't GPU friendly, more CPU cores will help.
 
In case it matters, all of the "demos" featuring 4K editing to date have been on "maxed out" 8-core machines. I don't know if that means 1TB storage and 64GB RAM, but I assume so. In the coming weeks many more benchmarks and comparisons will surface.

Look at the Promise2 prices and options for storage. They aren't cheap, but it's as close to an HDPro2 I can find for the new MacPro at the moment. Will more closely consider this when the time comes to upgrade. Waiting until at least ship times for the new MacPro aren't 6-8+ weeks, but likely a bit longer. My clients aren't asking for 4K or have a need, unfortunately - 720HD is more than ample for 75% of their projects.

Consider RAM upgrades from 3rd party if you're trying to maximize your dollar. Can likely save a few hundred that way.

I just watched a video of someone doing realtime editing of 4k video with 18 effects in FCP10 on an 8-core nMP. It was truly impressive.
 
And thats where the first rerun will happen :) of a nMP mini

your 4 hrs of 4k video editing will destroy any external drive capability and 1 tb internal drive will not be enough
welcome to the new age of luck of internal storage memory, but there is some very smart guys and they will tell you that TB is super fast hold on we do not have and high capacity super fast drives yet, they may become available one day but for now you will be limited to sata3 speeds and no technology can speed this up
Drobo max speed on TB is 1/3 of data 2 speed. those new computers will be great for gaming and some armatures photographers and video graphers
they will have a very limited use for a pro
They may run fast at start but after processing data on it for 100 hrs straight and dealing with very large file.
when we come from event between 3 photographers we can bring close to 1 TB of photos the import of those photos is limited to USB3 speeds processing is limited to 4 to 6 core but very intense in internal and hard drive memory.
Exporting and converting 1 TB of files from Tiff and Raw to jpeg it takes about 6 hrs.
Moving 2 TB of files from internal to external drive and thats TB on my rMBP takes over 7 hrs and thats on Lacie 4TB TB drive
Its starts fast and then its slows down to less then 100MB from 175
so if you think the new pro is it may be internally but with out proper drives it will be useless for a pro
so if you are a pro I would wait before you make a jump if you are sitting on 5.1 or 4.1
With in 6 months there will be so many complains about the speed that apple will have to do something either introduce their own super raid drive that can utilize quad drive raid but for now you all be stuck with Sata 3 speeds

wow for 2 min video my rMBP can do this

but it start to lug after 15 minutes of video, and if you start back up at the same time it will start to drop frames until you see a true production unit in a true pro working with hrs of production this doesn't prove anything
well not to me
