I just received my refurbished Macbook Pro 17" from Apple on Friday.
Today, I can see a round discoloration on the right side of my palm rest.

I've seen some references to this on Apple's web support site, but no resolution is posted anymore and the discussions are locked.

Are they sweeping this under the rug or is there a known issue that I can call Apple for? Honestly, either way I am calling Apple tomorrow.

Please let me know what the latest info is on this.... Please... Thanks!

You have every right to return it if you are not completely satisfied withing 14 days.

Call Apple Care and log a case number and keep good records.
Just tell them you're not happy with it period.

I wouldn't think you should need are advice to make such an easy decision. Send it back. It is unanimous.

Now pack it up, send it back :)

Get a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Then wash it off. Then wash your hands before you use the computer.;)

Heh, don't act all smug in your reply...

The issue he's talking about is the degredation of the metal wrist-rest. Some people refer to it as "pitting". Mr. Clean Magic Erasers don't do a thing about metal that has degraded, they just clean extra gunk off it.

I had/have the same problem with my MBP. It took a bit longer than 7 days for it to become noticeable, but AppleCare will fix it for you. Honestly, they should have put some kind of protective coating on it to prevent sweat from eating away through the metal... but I guess they didn't think of that.

It seems some laptops are more suceptible to it than others and obviously some people have more acidic sweat than others, so that's a factor as well.

If it's only been a week, I'd just try to get an exchange at the Apple Store.

I must have acid hands...!
Well, this was an official Apple refurb so I bet it was never addressed to begin with.
I called Apple and they told me that it would take almost two weeks to get it in and back. They suggested I try a local authorized repair center.
I don't have any real Apple Stores, so I called CompUSA and another local Apple retailer and both told me they would just end up sending it in to Apple anyway. Bummer.
I love the MBP, so I don't feel I need to return it all together but it looks like my only other option is to return it to Apple for repair.
I wonder if a real Apple Store could exchange it for me even though it is a refurb model? I'd have to drive over to Seattle to do it though, which is about 4.5 hours each way.

i think its because they don't always have refurbs of the same model as yours, so exchanging of refurbs machine might take longer time.
