are the current macbooks 64 bit? if not, will they be when they ship in the spring, to run Mac OS X Leopard?

and, will current macbooks be able to run Mac OS X Leopard properly?

please explain to a waiting mac newbie...

Leopard has 64-bit support, but it certainly doesn't require a 64-bit system. Apple have not yet released any 64-bit laptops.

Hi! This is my very first post and I'm glad to help you out.

No, the current macbooks (and macbook pros) are not 64-bit per say, but they are 32-bit. I can say that I am among the many here waiting for a macbook refresh to merom chips that are 64-bit before I take the plunge to buy.

And yes, Leopard is backwards compatible, meaning, it will run on current 32-bit macs. You got to remember that the 64-bit will only be taken advantage of if the program you're running is designed for 64-bit (let say if Photoshop gets released in 64-bit in the future), but in general you will be able to run Leopard with the current macs.
