64-Bit Vista on Boot Camp?

Quick question. Is it possible to use a 64-Bit version of Vista SP1 for Boot Camp? Drivers, etc, they all working?

It is not possible. Not sure if it's a hardware or software issue behind it, but I know that only 32-bit versions of Windows are currently supported in Boot Camp.

Maybe this will be changing in the future... we can hope.

Just been doing some research of my own, and it would seem that 64-Bit versions are now supported.

You do indeed. I couldn't find anything of note on Google, strange what changing '64 bit' to '64-bit' in a search string will do for you.

I installed the 64 bit Vista Ultimate SP1 on my MBP over a year ago and haven't had any problems. Install was quick and all the drivers worked.

It didn't used to be possible but recently (past 6months I think) they added 64-bit support for Pro Machines. iMacs and Macbooks still don't have official 64-bit Vista support but people have gotten it working using the MacPro and MacbookPro drivers.

I have Vista x64 running on bootcamp on my new macbook pro unibody.

the setup was incredibly easy,

start in boot camp already built into mac osx 10.5, let it partition for you

throw in vista x64 CD, let it run for about 40 minutes

throw back in OSX CD that came with the macbook pro for drivers and run setup.exe within vista

boom, everything works


I don't know why everyone hates on vista so much anymore, I love having both on here.. it obviously uses the battery quicker and uses more ram at idle, but its the best of both worlds

People hate on Vista out of ignorance. I know what you mean though. I started running Vista64 after SP1 came out and it was nothing but excellent (now replaced with Windows 7 though). Whatever, it's their loss.

Your ignorance = my experience Your opinion is skewed cos you only jumped on the Vista bandwagon after SP1. When it launched it was horrendous, worse than the BSOD bonanza of Win2k's first few months. I got far more work downgrading to XP than I ever did with any previous OS since MS-DOS 4.0 back to 3.3, even topping ME to 98. The only Vista licence I have out of a dozen XP and servers is the HTPC for Vista Media Center which is my highlight of a half baked OS.

Windows 7 on the other hand is properly baked even in RC - what Vista should have been from the start. You'll find once you've got the drivers sorted it blows Vista 64 away..

No kidding, hence why I said AFTER SP1. I didn't skip the Vista bandwagon before SP1. I tried it, didn't work that great, so I switched back to XP at the time. Everyone knows Vista sucked prior to SP1 for a number of reasons (lack of drivers being one of them, but that's wasn't Microsoft's fault). People seem to forget XP sucked balls before SP1 came out too. Some might argue that it wasn't even that awesome until SP2 came about.

But now with Windows 7, the XP vs Vista argument is totally done. Windows 7 > any other Windows OS.

Just as an addition, Windows Vista x86_64 SP2 works without any issues on my end. I've been running service pack 2 since the RTM version leaked to the web and have had no issues with it.

I agree on the whole front that windows 7 is an all around excellent RC and will be very popular

however, vista driver issues were mostly due to people upgrading to vista with hardware that was obsolete.

I and many others started with vista when it was released before SP1, and have had not had any problems. I currently use vista on 26 machines and have no problems with it whatsoever. I did have some problems before SP1 on some machines, but they were all older tech, up to date machines ran it like cake, but the OS is inherently ram hungry. XP had the same problems right when it was released as well.

anyways, vista is anything but a half baked OS, however windows 7 is what vista should have been.. I totally agree with you there.

Bottom line guys, is that Vista only runs like a retarded OS when you have older hardware, whereas Windows 7 runs on old hardware no problem. If you have newer hardware, Vista is still a RAM hog.
